Doc, I've built and rebuilt motors, motorcycles and cars since the seventies, what can be the CAUSE of svs from an engineering standpoint? All I can come up with is that the valve stem/guide tollerance is too close. Anything else I come up with would effect so many other motors out on the road. Mine has about 8,000 miles with no sign of svs but if it had I would buy my own 6mm ream and do it myself cause I don't trust the ameteurs at the dealer. If too tight a tollerance was the problem, you would think that it would be less and less likely as the guide wore with mounting mileage.

Hi there everyone! What is the most common oil used in the bikes that this (svs) applies too?? (20w-50, 10w-40)Or "how should I phrase this" what are the relating factors?

That's what has been theorized and why the ream job (sounds sexy ) seems to work most of the time.

There was also a change in the valves and heads in 06. The seat face is wider due to a different grind angle.

Probably a combination of the two seems (??) to have resulted in less of a problem for the new 1700s compared to the older 1700s.

Well I've been looking for my scratch pad that I had when I was talking to yami...cant find it. I do remember that the bulletin with the new oil recommendation and the hotter plug was in Feb. but I cant remember the day,(he did tell me). Anyway I called my stealership and asked for someone in charge.. when I finally got him, he said he didnt know about that bulletin but he will inquire Yami about it. LOL, I've been bitchin' at my stealership so much lately, that when I walk in they get me right off the floor and take me back to the service area.. and started calling me MR. Oh well , if I hear any more about that bulletin I'll pass it on if someone already hasn't. Oh yea... I agree with all of ya.. We oughta get together one day and call Yami within a 2 hr. period... at least a couple hundred calls anyway.

Hi guys, dealing with this situation myself. My 05 has 3700 miles and started showing symptoms of svs. The idiot at the parts counter finally pushed his lip rings aside with his tongue enough to tell me that he doesn't really believe in Ring Free. So its off to the service dept I go. The tech who comes to assist me, has never heard of any of these problems, and has trouble telling me this through his heavily pierced lower lip as well. So, off to the service manager I go. He has never heard of any of this either. Experts, huh. I was told everything from accesories to worn out motor could be causing the problem. After explaining the results from a kilivolt drop test and compression test, I explained to him that if my motor was worn out with 3700 miles, Yamaha would refund enough money for me to have a Patrick Racing 110. Heated words were had and I was asked to leave the showroom floor. Anything I can do to help you guys will be done, just let me know what you need. Oh by the way, a substitute for seafoam---Lucas upper cyl. lube. I use it because it has all the same effects as seafoam, without the harsh effects. The old water trick helps too. Sorry guys, done venting. Hopefully we can get through to get this situation handled.

The dealer was the root cause of my SVS. Bought the bike had them put the pipes on. 3000 miles the rear cylinder died plugs fouled. Had them install a hypercharger same thing again. They did tell me 3 3/4 qts oil though. At 7000 miles warrenty ran out so I did my own work. Put on a BAK ported the manifold removed AIS home made baffles for the pipes and rejetted. It took me a month and a half but I now have no SVS no fouled plugs and she run great. Moral of this story dealers hire kids or old men that ride crotch rockets or Harleys and don't know SXXT. If after maket stuff causes it then stealers shouldn't sell it along with the bikes. But that is just bull crap cause they don't know what they are doing. Want it done right do it yourself. Yami ned to smack their dealers.

I asked over on the RSR if anyone else has been told to run 3.1 qts. I just got a reply from someone with SVS that was told the same thing.

I wont be around the puter for a couple days, but if someone calls the 800 number to yami and ask's them for info on the feb. 07' bulletin, I'm sure they'll give it to ya. I will when I get back, I need it to educate my 'stealer'.

I just got off the phone with Yamaha Corp.with a young guy named Aaron and he said to follow the instructions in the Sevice bulletin about poor performance and how to check your oil.According to Aaron there has not been another service bulletin that has ever said how much oil should be put in at an oil change let alone 3.1 quarts. Boy would I like to see it in print so I could send it to him.

Interesting topic here. I guess I'll learn one day what "SVS" is, but if you guys are talking about fouled plugs, or spitting and popping, then I'm right with ya!

I've got 9600 miles on my Star. Last Friday it started popping and skipping a little after the morning startup. It acted much like it did back when I was having carborator jetting issues. I had the plugs changed at 1600 miles to the fancy Iridium plugs, and the bike ran great for all this time. So I took the bike in on Saturday and got them to change the plugs. After, they mixed up some "special" gas and wanted me to drive it out all in one day. Told me that "Yamaha" had told them that there was a "Potential" problem with Roadstars.

Now, before I started, the bike sounded funny. Kindof like it had a valve or two stuck open, or that it wasn't firing on all four plugs. After the 160 mile run in the Texas heat, it seemed as if it was back to normal. I haven't driven it since Saturday. Sorry, I was on the Lake.

I've reordered the Iridium plugs, and they should be in this week. We'll see how the stock plugs work tonight when I go to "Bike Night" at Bikini's Bar & Grill, Austin, Texas.

Dang, I got long winded.
