Flatpockets:

I'm not at my home computer right now, but I have a .PDF file of the Yamaha Service Bulletin regarding our "poor performance" issues. In that bulletin, they mention things like using Ring Free periodically, letting your Road* warm up properly, using the enricher knob properly, etc. If memory serves me, that bulletin DOES recommend using only 4 quarts of oil when doing an oil/filter change.

If you'd like a copy, PM me your e-mail addy and I can send it to you.

If there's a newer bulletin out there regarding 3.1 quarts or whatever, someone please get their hands on it so that it can be posted!

Thanks.

Interesting topic here. I guess I'll learn one day what "SVS" is,

SVS = sticky valve syndrome ... the exhaust valve on the rear cylinder sticks open causing it to draw spent exhaust gases into the cylinder - making the bike run like crap... late SVS can be found with a compression test but I believe early SVS won't show since that checks a compression stroke not an Intake stroke... can also be diagnosed by hanging a dollar bill in front of the rear cylinder exhaust and seeing if the dollar bill gets sucked up to the exhaust opening at any time (d/t the the backwards draw of air)... the special gas would have had ring free mixed into it... which cleans off the suspect carbon which builds on the valve reams (tubes the valves move in)... the condition develops from a rich mixture of gas vs air (rich is to much gas) so all the gas is not burnt completely and it sticks to everything including the inside of you exhaust pipes... things to check include: your carb tuning, your float level, your float valve, your fuel pump shut off pressure, your spark intensity / coil output, the type of gas you burn (lower octane is better) high octane burns slower and increases the chance you'll not completely burn all the gas before exhausting it... ~Guido

Post edited by: davehrn, at: 2007/05/17 20:13

I blew up an 03 WR450 three time in the first 6 months. I NEVER have heard so much denial... This happened to owners of this bike all over the world (Thumper Talk) Yamaha was simply awful.. They lied and stalled and refused to recognize their own mechanical flaw clear across the globe. They are very diffficult to deal with... 3days short of California's they got it rite. Part of this was the dealer I'm sorry to say..

Just left my yami stealer.. talked to a mechanic ...he said he heard about the 3.1 oil change also thru his super, but has'nt seen anything yet. I got him to get on the computer and he found feb. 16 bulletin, titled.... POOR ENGINE PERFORMANCE (MISFIRE, BACKFIRE, SPARK PLUG FOULING, AND VALVE STICKING) ALL XV1700 ROADSTAR MODELS. First paragraph say's... "Please use the information in this bulletin to assist you in HANDLING customer concerns about xv1700 roadstar engine performance. Recently, Yamaha has recieved an increase in reports of misfire, plug fouling and sticking valves on the xv1700 roadstars. We have determined that these issues generally have one of three cause's " .....and we know the rest. goes right into adding 'ringfree' and fixing the problem. The next paragraph talks about adding pipes and such is another reason for the problem..what a load of crap. I've been adding pipes and having the proper jetting done to V twins for 20 years never had a problem until now. Anyway had my bike there..told them I had a stuck valve ..the kid..sorry "Mechanic"..told me it sounded ok to him..lol Did a compression check... front cylinder 150, rear cylinder 90. Kid has a great ear Pulling the valve cover tonight , I'll check in tomorrow with a report.

Just curious? Has anyone tried a lead addative? That was used in older vehicles to lubricate the valve stem and guide.

There is no new memo yet as I was at the shop today...... every one needs to report their SVS problems tohttp://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/complain/complaintsearch.cfm as some have suggested and not keep using ringfree.....complaints are one thing...... a bike in the shop locked up like Clifdogs is a safety issue.....imagine going down the highway in rush hour traffic doing 75 and your bike decides to start firing on one cylinder......come on guys take 10 minutes and report your concerns.....Coug

Well Cougar thats exactly what mine did wed. I thought I blew it up. Took it to my 'stealer' ...made them tear into it, they were happy to do it (yea right)..moved it ahead of 5 other bikes. After all the bitchin' I've been doin' I think they finally believe me that there's something wrong. Rear cylinder locked up tight. They called a few hours ago and told me it was done, They got everything loose and adjusted it up. I just brought it home.. and it's never ran better. I know now that I had a problem from the day I bought it used with 2500 miles on it. Also when it happened it dumped about half a gallon of gas in the crankcase. Did the oil change and got 6.4 qts. of gassy smellin' oil out of it. Only had 500 miles on 4 qts. of Amsoil Anyway ,when it came time to pay the bill for the labor I told them to kiss my ASS! After an hour and 3 office people later I left with my bike. Payed for my 4 qts. of oil and a filter.. left them with the $225 dollar labor bill! They ate it!I was suprised. They told me if I needed anything else to let them know LOL! Anyway...crossing my fingers..DAMN I love how this thing runs! Like I said...it's never ran this good.. I kinda knew it had a lot more power to it. it's kinda scary now .. oh yea today two mechanics told me they heard about the 3.1 change also, but I dont know from where???

Post edited by: blackroadie, at: 2007/05/18 19:13

Hey Coug

Did your guy say where this 3.1 qts could have come from? 2 people were told the same thing at 2 different dealers.

Hey musky...I talked so long to the guy from customer service the other day it's hard for me to remember but, it might be coming out in a new bulletin pretty soon. After all the crap I went thru today I kinda made friends with 1 of the salesman up there. He's got my number , if he hears anything he's gonna let me know. He's quitting that 'stealer' in a couple weeks..he could care less...lol

Hey Blackroadie I'm glad you finally got your roadie fixed.
When I get down to my dealer I'm going to ask about the oil issue myself.
I've not had that problem with mine yet but I run the hell out of it and have made it to 14000 miles so far Keep us posted if you would please.
