Only time I have ever noticed any slippage is when I used 20w50 dino oil. Been using Amsoil 10w40 riding mostly 2 up with absolutely no problems in winter or summer.Owners Manual says 10w40...... Amsoil Website says 10w40.... so I will stick with it.

I just started experiencing clutch slippage under hard WOT accell in 3rd, 4th & 5th gear only after re-jetting carb and poormans BAK to stock airbox and stage 2 stock exhaust mod. All was good last fall before the winter mods. The oil in the engine was Yamalube from the dealer when they did the trans recall last fall (I had Ams/Oil 20/50 in it from when I first purchased the bike). I tried the seafoam treatment in the oil last week and though there was an improvement it still slipped a bit. I changed out the oil and filter today for my usual AmsOil 20/50. We'll see how this goes. My 99 only has a little over 17,000 miles on it but I have been reading on issues with the factory weak clutch. It works just fine under normal everyday easy riding. Just the extreem "Get On It" runs is when it slips. BTW, I am and have been only using the motorcycle AmsOil.

Just a quick update, since I dumped the Yami-Lube from the recall service last fall and put back in the Amsoil 20-50 MC oil I now have zero clutch slippage. I just came back from some WOT tuning runs (0-90+) on an isolated road and not a bit of slip though I tried. I even pulled the clutch in a bit in 4th and when released she locked right in and pulled away. Ok, some bucks saved for now on a clutch spring upgrade. It may have been a combo deal with using the seafoam prior to changing out the oil. Anyway all is good now and I got her diled in quite nice now, I am pleased with the added performance from my winter mods

I went from Amsoil synth to Castrol synth before my last oil change (Back to AMs...)
I got just the opposite from clutch slip when I put my Star in gear...
I would start her up... push in the choke... and when I pulled in the clutch and pressed the shifter into first, the bike would learch forward for a split second... almost like I didn't pull the clutch in enough...
This condition has since subsided, but my shop told me it may have been caused by the Castrol having slip modifyers in it and the Amsoil not...
BTW: not to be the bearer of scary news but... The friction plates of most clutches are assembled with brass rivets... (Food for thought...)
