Clutch or belt slip? 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Here's the scenario: 65mph, top gear, giv'er the throttle, engine revs way up before bike begins to accelerate. Is this a slipping clutch or belt? How concerned should I be?
2000 Silverado 1600, 53,000 miles, unknown maintenence history.
Thanks, Alex

Clutch. Not too big of a job. What oil was used at the last oil change? It could have had friction modifiers in it making it incompatible for wet clutches.

Using Yamalube, but don't know what he previous owner(s) had in there. Where should I look for a new clutch (kit, I'm guessing) ?
Also - belt does seem a bit dry, any thoughts?

Before you go buying a new clutch try adjusting your clutch cable! My '01 will do that in the upper gears if the clutch cable is too tight. They say you should have a nickel's width of freeplay at the clutch lever, but mine has to have considerbly more than that to operate in all the gears, at all speeds. Just my .02. Besides can't hurt to try !

Yeh, definitely clutch, and yeh, you must ascertain if adjustments are correct first. Other than that, the plates may still be fine, as it has been determined the cluth spring tends to be on the weak side on these beasts, and a new spring may be all she needs. Measure the plate thickness first for tolerance, if it's within specs, you only need to upgrade the spring. Don't go stock. Use a Warrior spring.

sounds like pressure plate spring. Tons of options, speedstar accessories offers 2, warrior spring, my mod is a Virago1100 spring piggy backed on stock one, or the Barnett kit. Your plates are probably fine, I have 114k on stock plates, and 67k miles on mod.
