Thread Size for Exhaust Flange Studs? 5 Years ago
Roadies:

I have Roadhouse Classics 2-1 pipes. After trying to re-torque the OEM exhaust flange nuts yesterday, I have decided to replace them with regular stainless steel nuts and washers (don't ask why).

I know that the hex head on the OEM flange nuts is 8M, but what is the thread size?

Also, any tips from those with similar experience (you can read between the lines above) would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help.

I won't ask why( ), but I'm not sure that SS is your best option. It is a lot more tempermental(?) metal, and likes to gall easy, which isn't something you want in a situation where you might need to take it off occasionally. Just my 2 cents.BB

06MS--

I know what you're saying...those things strip out really easily. I asked that question here once before for exactly the same reason, and if I'm not mistaken, 8M is the thread size. I just picked up some 6M bolts for the saddlebag mounts...all that varies is the bolt length...6M 1.5", 6M 1", etc...

Roadkill:

I'm confused. You mentioned 8M and 6M in the same sentence. I'm looking for the nut size that fits the studs for the exhaust header pipe. Is it 6M or 8M?

Thanks.

Big Bear:

What do you suggest: Acorn nuts? Standard nuts? Zinc nuts? Hardened steel nuts?

The size is also critical. I need to konw the size.

Thanks.

I don't know the size (sorry), but I'm guessing a good chrome acorn nut would work(that's what my shadow used OEM). SS can be a mess, so I was just trying to head off unnecessary headache for you.BB

Sorry...I do that sometimes, even confuse myself...

I was just using the 6M as an example of thread size. When I asked the same question you did way back when, Pop Rivet told me the exhaust bolts are 8M. No one was sure of the length, but Musky gave me a great suggestion and made fun of me at the same time...which I always appreciate! Take one bolt out, take it to the store and compare sizes to make sure you get the right length.

Big Bear:

The correct size nut for the exhaust flange studs is:

8M x 1.25

I used anti-seize on the studs and went with the stainless steel nuts and stainless steel flat washers. I was going to cap them with the OEM nuts, but decided against it. I want to be able to tighten the s/s nuts without having to remove the OEM nuts first.

Anyway, I installed the s/s nuts and washers today and I'm pleased with the new setup. The nuts are plenty tight.

Thanks for your input.

Roadkill:

No length involved - these are nuts, not bolts? Just needed to find 8M x 1.25 s/s nuts and flat washers to replace the OEM setup.

I've ditched the OEM hex nuts for the s/s setup. Much better solution, IMHO.

Thanks.

DOH!

You're right, of course...today was probably not the best day for my "clarity level" (lack of sleep). Bolts, studs, nuts... At least I got the thread size right...I think. I promise not to give any more advice today. I think I'll go to bed now...
