Why the R*?? 5 Years ago
I have my own reasons for choosing the RS but what about you guys? What sets the RS apart from the Harleys, Kawis, and Susukis and a host of other cruisers? I've never owned any other cruiser but have owned many Yamaha products and found them to be very reliable hence part of the reason I chose the RS.

Look forward to any responses but to each their own, what the Harley guys likes I may not so I don't mind that he/she chose a Harley so lets not bash them. K?

I walked in to the dealer, saw it sitting there, and before I even knew what make or model it was I knew I was going to end up buying it. So there wasn't any research or looking around that played into my decision. I wasn't even bike shopping.

Yeah Musky, but that doesn't tell me why... what is it about the RS that did it for you and now that you have it what separates it from other crusiers?

over the years I've had a number of riceburners, plus one Harley and one old BSA. Of all the bikes, the fit & finish and general mechanical quality of the Yamahas has been the deciding factor for me. They're way, way more reliable than my Harley ever was. As for my Roadie in particular (an 01 Silverado), all it took was twisting the throttle open on my test ride and I knew I had to have it. Never been sorry.

Just like you NIBS I owned a lot of bike and a lot of Yamaha's. Could never fault any of my bikews I took good care of them. I had a VStar 650 I bought when gas hit $3 and it was ok but small just didn't feel right and then I took the wife for a ride. That did it I went to the dealer and saw the R* sat on it never took a ride on it just bought it right then. It felt right and I loved the looks of it and I don't regret it one bit. It's twice the bike of the big H at half the price. Event the H guys that have ridden it say that. It's one sweeeeeeeet machine.

Re:Why the R*?? 5 Years ago
Well, to be honest, I would love to have a Harley Roadking but it is way out of my price range, so my first bike that I bought was a vstar 650 because it was affordable and had the big bike look. That bike was taken out of the picture due to a hit & run (I was t-boned......ouch). While I was laid up, I was talking with a old high school friend of mine and he made the comment "I guess you aren't going to be riding anymore, huh?" Which I replied " Actually I am looking for a bike right now." That's when he told me about the roadstar he had for sale. Since I liked the Vstar, I knew I would like the roadstar with the bigger motor and more power. It has the look that I like for a price that I could afford, is reliable. Though I really don't have anything to compare it to since the vstar and roadstar are the only bikes I have ever rode.

The "why" was the looks. I saw it and wanted it. That was really all there was to it. Now that I own it I would say what sets it apart is the ease of working on it, and being able to work on it because it doesn't have all sorts of electronic don't touch components that you need codes, a computer, and a dealer for.

I guess I could take offence to the guys thing but that is another topic
totally.
I have been on a lot of different bikes. I also had a chance at an
HD not that long ago. I thought it was to small and didn't have the power
or the size my bike has. I guess it is true, size does matter.
I get a lot of comments about the size of my bike and I haven't seen any
HD's as big as the R* so it is safe to say I'm a big fan of Yamaha.

Post edited by: 1700chris, at: 2007/05/22 20:05

Wish I could say all the good things I have learned since owning one, but it was the looks, price and sound for me. I got a chance to see a customized one in 2001 and fell in love.

I have owned Yamaha's before, and my brother has ridden them continuously since we were kids, so knew I could at least expect a reasonable bike.

Now I could give you a million reasons, but at the time that was what it came down to.

I'm with Musky on this one

btw.... If there had been a Fat Boy in the same price range it would have been a tougher decision (at the time..., I am fully converted now).
