Re:helmut questions 2 Years, 1 Month ago
I ride with a shorty 9 months out of the year the other 3 I use a modular. It is just too hot in Florida for me to wear the full helmet. A colleague of mine wears a full all year around. We have gone to lunch together and when he has pulled his helmet off he is covered in sweat.
To answer your question I guess it depends on where you are going to ride. I know Florida is a NO helmet state if you are over 18 and have insurance. I am sure there are some states where my shorty would not qualify as a legal helmet and I could be cited for using it in that state.
One thing I have noticed is my modular helmet weighs a lot more than my shorty and I have gotten a stiff neck a number of times when using it for long rides.

I'll stay with the half. I used to ride with a 3/4, but the lower edge broke my collarbone in two places in an accident. The top saved my skull, so I don't even think about riding w/o one. But, a half would have protected me the same and saved my collarbone.

I used to use a Bell Shorty most of the time, but due to my sinuses being irritated by the wind blast, even with a windshield, I went with a modular that is really nice. It's Shark Evoline. The chin guard unlatches and rotates back over the helmet and locks in place. The face shield remains usuable or you can lift it up for in town riding. Also has the jet fighter style sun visor that, though a little goofy looking, eliminates the need to wear sunglasses. It was a little pricey but gave me the best of both worlds...3/4 or full face.

Is it me, or did the old school 3/4 seem alot thinner (tighter to the head). I like that style, but all the newer ones I've tried look huge (mushroom head).

I swear, if someone could invent a thin DOT helmet that doesn't make you look like one of the bad guys from Super Mario Bros they would make a fortune!

I wear a modular on long rides, and a shorty when i am staying close to home, my kids wear a fullface everytime I take them out on the bike. There are pro's and con'c for every type of helmet, so I guess it is just a matter of what you are comfortable with.

very good description. I went into shop yesterday to try on some open face helmets and walked out empty handed for that exact reason,...they were all mushroom shaped. Man I'm ugly enough as it is, I don't need to draw attention to it.

Unfortunatly, to be a help, they need some shock absorbing qualities, that means padding of some kind... You can make a kevlar/carbon shell, but it's harder than the pavement, so you need something that will crush before your head does......I write it off as a necessary evil...
