Oil weight 5 Years ago

I was wondering what weight of oil I should run? I live in Sunny Florida and will need to do an oil change soon. I will be going with full synthetic.

Yamaha recommends THEIR 20-40 (good luck finding anybody else who makes 20-40). That being said, I (and many others) run 20-50, specifically Mobil 1 v-twin full syn. bike oil.BB

If money is no object, run motorcycle specific Amsoil 20W-50 or like BB said, motorcycle specfic Mobile 1 V-Twin 20W-50.

Correct me if I am wrong..
A 40w oil will thin out at higher temps faster than a 50W oil..but with new higher
tolerance motors 40w is all that is needed but 50w is better...???
Lower end viscosity is for cold weather only...10w vers 20w which means an oil with a lower viscosity will be not be as thick in cold weather...???

There are lot of good oils out there...but formulations have changed and the oil
ya dumped in yer old whatever... 10 years ago is NOT the same oil ...
TO BE SAFE.. a JASO MA certified Oil is what the R* needs..
I know most of you can read labels ...IF it does not not state JASO MA certified
then it is 100% for sure an Auto oil which has additives to please catalytic converters and the EPA...
You may run auto oil in yer bike fer years without issues... but then maybe not???

20w50 V-Twin Synthetic from Mobil works very well! Makes engine quieter as well. Rotella 15w40 is another great choice because of no friction modifiers and a high phosphorus content. (yeah...It's diesel oil.)
Mobil makes a synthetic diesel oil that is available in a 20w50 and it is the exact same oil as the V-Twin Synthetic. It is cheaper, though. This info comes from an ANSI laboratory oil test. Royal Purple 20w50 car oil topped the charts for temperature reduction as did their V-Twin Synthetic. BE CAREFUL OF OILS WITH FRICTION MODIFIERS. Wet clutches do not like them. Anything that says "Energy Saving or Energy Conserving" in the API Seal...It has friction modifiers. Your engine will run really good...but your clutch will slip like a an airborne cat hitting a teflon panel.

I had a lot of engine noise in my 1600, I went through my own oil test of 5 different brands 300 miles each (expensive but I had to know the difference for my own piece of mind) Mobile 1 V-Twin gives me the best results with almost no engine noise, Amsoil was very close and I use it if I cant find Mobile when I change. I have found no two bikes are exactly alike as my wifes 1700 (1700chris) could run goat piss I think as it likes anything I put in it
during this test I was running hard in 85 to 95 degree weather. I switched three other bikes (all 1700s) to Mobile with great results.
