what toothed pully do i need? 5 Years ago
i have a 2005 rs. i think the pully is a 31 tooth? my problem is that here in Tennessee i do a lot of back road rides. average speed is 40 to 60 depending on traffic. "sunday sight drivers every day ". my problem is the bike dont like 5th gear until around 60mpg., so alot of the time im in 4th gear, if i put a 32 tooth pully on i should get into 5th a little sooner, am i right? come on musky some input!

You have it backwards.

Go up in teeth - the bike revs lower at highway, less jump in the pants at lights
Go down in teeth - the bike revs higher at highway, like a rabbit off the line.

So if you go up in teeth you need to wait longer before shifting.

Are you sure you have a 31?

Here is the info from Barons:

RPM change compared to stock at 80MPH.
RoadStar 25.45" Tire and stock 33 Tooth Pulley: 3003RPM - 32 Tooth Pulley: 3098RPM
31 Tooth Pulley: 3196RPM

I no doubt need the 30 or 31 tooth pulley then. I do about 50/50 in/town and hwy riding. My in/town stuff is everyday to and from work about 25 miles one way.My hwy trips are usually 200 miles and under. I want a little better balance between the two. I'm two up most of the time on the long runs and the motor seems to lug all the time in 5th. I just don't like it at all. Is the bike too busy at 80mph with the 30 tooth pulley?

if you going to change the pully.. You need to change the teeth number belt drive. becuz pully have the number as 32 numbers and belt need to match the number of teeth..
thats what friend told me about it . I thought about getting new polly and get low gear to kick off But for long trip. i like to keep RPM melllow. I traveling long trips mostly time. by bill

You should already have a 32 on it if it's stock. If you want to get higher revs quicker you go smaller on the front.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something but what's wrong with just staying in 4th gear if you aren't going fast enough fo 5th?

Musky,
Just my personal preference I guess but I don't like the high 1st gear either especially when riding 2 up or red light to red light in town.

Hey n5

We all have to get em the way we like em. The good thing is the parts are out there and it's easy to do

Dozer~ I had the same problem here in Michigan. Had the stock 33 on the front when I got it. Found a steal of a deal on a 32 over the winter and switched it out. It's a little better with the 55/60 luggin' along in 5th gear. It doesn't labor as much. I think if that's the constant speed that your running when you ride most, you'll probably find it better to get the 31. Besides, you'll have some hellacious take-offs with the 31 on there!
