Exhaust flutter 5 Years ago
|
|
The Samson Shotguns on my 06 Silverado have an irritating flutter on decel. I have the Samson baffles installed. Stock carb and airbox. I haven't touched the carb or PMS.
Would taking out the baffles tend to help reduce the flutter? It doesn't sound bad, but I know it can sound so much better.
I'm also thinking about just changing pipes as I haven't been very happy with the Shotguns. The slipon portions have an ever increasing gap between them and the head pipes. Plus, the upper slipon turned gold the first long day after installing the pipes. However, 500 miles in 100 degree heat on the way to Sturgis didn't help matters.
Any ideas on reducing my flutter?
Thanks guys.....greeny

If I'm not mistaken Greeny.. adjusting the pms helps minimize the flutter. I'm sure someone here will know exactly what to do. good luck

If the AIS is still on the bike, you might be hearing some noise from the exhaust because of that. Flutter=light popping on decel? If so AIS will contribute.BB

Big Bear - I took the AIS off about the time I put the pipes on.
blackroadie - What pipes are on your bike? They sure look a lot like my Samsons.
Anyone have a thought on baffles vs. no baffles? I wasn't sure if their sole purpose was to quiet down pipes or if they add back pressure as well?
Thanks everyone...greeny

Check the seal between the head pipe and the tail pipe?

I have that same flutter. I have Vance & Hines Straight Shots. Baffle sniffle. Trying to pull air back in in the absence of positive exhaust flow. Don't worry about it! Just don't decelerate! Just keep going full throttle til you see God!

Post edited by: archangel777, at: 2007/05/24 21:57

I have had in the past where the decel sound was tinny or just plain irritating, taking the baffle out made the decel sound deeper and more appealing. I have taken the baffles from some pipes and cut about 3/4 of it off to dampen the overal sound but change the tone. Had a lot of pop with my new pipes and found I had an exhaust leak and had to run a double exhaust gasket to fix it. As for the gold color it sounds like the bike is a bit rich, you may have to jet it.

I appreciate all the help. I'll check for an exhaust leak this weekend. I've always assumed the bike runs rich as it's my understanding most come that way from Yamaha. I haven't messed with the carb yet. I'm getting just under 40MPG on average if that's a sign of running rich too. I've heard of these getting closer to 50MPG tuned right.
Tried pulling the baffles out and they're sealed in pretty good. Any good method on removing baffles that have been in place for a year? I didn't want to pull too hard thinking I might mess up something. I remember them being pretty tight when installing. Nothing I had to pound a hammer on, but snug nonetheless.
Thanks all.....greeny

try drilling a small hole in the end of the baffle and put in a screw so you have something to grab on to. (a small slide puller works well here) Probably what is keeping you snug is a ridge of carbon built up that you have to get past. I have the same flutter with my Bub Stubbies, and I am hoping that going froma 3/4 in baffle to a 1/2 in baffle will help. Another thing is to pack the baffle with fiberglass or steel wool may help.
