Cap resistors 5 Years ago
Since I found out the 4164's are a resistor plug and since we have resistors in our plug caps I was thinking about taking the resistors out of the caps. I did it today. Replaced them with pieces of #6 copper ground wire. I don't know if doing this should make a noticable difference but it did. If nothing else it gets rid of a potential busted part problem.

What busted part problem? You mean the resistors in the plug caps? I'm running the 4164's so tell me more.

Hey Curt

The resistors wear out or can just break. When they do your spark kinda goes in the dumper. So I figured why have em if I don't need em.

I don't know enough about electrical stuff to say anything for sure but I just firgured that 2 resistor can't be good for the spark strength so I went to Home Depot and got a foot of #6 ground wire for .86 cents and got rid of the ones in the cap.

It does seem to have made a difference but it might just be the same as loud pipes make you feel like you're going faster.

No your right the resistors are to keep from making spark noise on TV and radio sets, if you have resistors in the caps and resistor plugs the resistance adds up as they are in series. 1+1= to much and a drop in spark intensity. Let me know if you see an increase in milage. I've been thinking about changing plug wires too. See your smarter than ya thought!

Even a blind squirrel with a busted watch finds a nut twice a day. Or somethin like that.

Hey BB

It has a cleaner sound if that makes sense. And it seems to have better response all around.

Fair enough. So I did alittle reading on RSR and it is a small piece of metal inside the end of the wire that you removed and installed the straight copper in? And how about the autolites? Never knew they had a bike application. Inital impression?BB

Hey BB

The 4164's are regular old car plugs but they do make a bike plug substitue. You unscrew the brass doodad( It's what snaps on to the plug) from the inside of the plug cap and dump the brass thing out and the resistor falls out after it. I have to give the usual warning - there is a spring in there too - but it doesn't fly out. It could fall out when you tip the cap upside down to dump the rest of the stuff out though. There's 2 different size resistors. I cut the wire the same length as the long ones. Then put it all back together. That's all there is to it. Here's a pic of the resistors and the wire piece.
