Loose rear fender or normal play?? 2 Years ago
|
|
I'll get right to it.
When I lift my rear fender from the bottom edge under the tail light it has about an 1/8th of an inch play up and down. I unplugged the elctric's and removed to 2 bolts so I could lift it and check it. I cannot find any cracks and the subframe looks good, the bolts were plenty tight when I took them out.
Has anyone else noticed this kind of play?
I am concerned because I really load this thing down when i go camping.
Thanks

make sure all three bolts are tight... that includes that big one up top with the lock nut on it... if that one is not tight, then you will have play, up and down, in your rear fender...

There should be no play in the fender.
Tighten the nut on the top bolt of the fender (on top of the A frame). If you are still getting play then the fender to stay bolts must be loose.

Thanks for the quick reply, I had checked that big bolt and it was tight so i am going to remove the fender, clean it and check it for cracks, cause it definitely has play and as you said it should not, something is amiss, i will let you know what I find.
Thanks

I had a bit or play in mine before and once I went around and tightened every single bolt (that includes the 2 on each side at the eyebrows and the one's where the rear seat mounts) the slop went away.
I make it a point to twice a riding season to go over the bike send to end and tighten every single nut and bolt to factory spec. You would be surprised what starts getting a bit loose. Also I always use Blue Loctite on pretty much everything. Its a bit of a pain but not near as bad as hardware falling off on the road.

You may have a crack. Mine was loose before when I thought it wss tight. (I'm not sayin, I'm just sayin) I got an another 1/4-3/8 turn on it when I put the torque wrench to it. u The upper sub-frame bolt. spec is 64ft lb. 35 ft lb on the two under it. I set mine @ 70ft lb and fixed it right up. ....I hate rattles.

Thanks to all for freely giving me hard earned advise! This the greatest forum because of the riders.
I took off the fender went down to the car wash and used engine cleaner on the inside. I tightened everything that I could put a wrench or socket on.
The play is gone and I know I don't have any cracks in the frame work.
I think I will put the removal of the rear fender and tightening of associated hardware in my planned maint. program.
I have been going over the R* about every 3 months tightening and checking but I was not getting those bolts on the inside of the fender assy.
Plus it sure is easy to clean the wheel and check all that stuff with the fender off!
Thanks again for you help, I'll keep passing it on.

In the tech articles section indexed above, see "reinforce the rear fender". I performed this upgrade on my 03' Roadie to reduce the risk of cracking by vibration. Now no more wobbly fender, which is inherent on the earlier bikes (sorry, I'm not sure which years were affected). If your rear fender vibrates like crazy at idle, this simple fix may be a good idea for you as well.
Cheers,
Garage
