Bags, Brackets - What did I just buy? 5 Years ago
OK - Here's the story... I've got a stock '06 Roadstar Midnight, which came with a studded seat (that year) and NO bags. I bought what were described as STOCK Silverado studded bags w/o hardware. What I got (see the picture below) are certainly Yamamha's soft, studded bags (stamped yamaha on the back) WITH some sort of bracket. They don't have a named stamped in them, but they look like some sort of Easy Brack or other similar adjustable quick release bracket.

I went to mount the little "fasteners" (lower right in the pic) on my bike by pulling out the allen screws in my eyebrows, but the new screws with the fasteners won't sit into the ressesed area in the eyebrows.

So, 1) What do I have here?

2) Is it normal to have to remove the eyebrows to mount one of these quick release systems?

3) Is the eyebrow strictly for show or is it functional for strength/support? (Is it safe to mount these w/o the eyebrows?)

4) Any other suggestions on how to procede? I don't want permanent bags mounted - I like the looks without, yet want to be able to throw some on when needed.

I believe they are Easy Brackets.

2) Is it normal to have to remove the eyebrows to mount one of these quick release systems?

Don't know but I suspect yes as the threaded part of the bolts looks too short

3) Is the eyebrow strictly for show or is it functional for strength/support? (Is it safe to mount these w/o the eyebrows?)

For show only .... it dresses up the bolts that hold the fender to the subframe.

Not from me.

I looked on the Easy Bracket website and didn't see anything that mentioned removing the eyebrows. Also, the pictures on the EB site don't match what I've got (see pics), unless there are just variances by model.

The new screws are longer, to account for the fastneer, but the fastener won't "bottom out" or "fit into" the resessed area in the eyebrows (they are too big). I wonder if I could put a spacer or something in there and use longer bolts? Trouble could be that they may stick out too far?

They might be ghost brackets. Kinda like easy brackets but they don't make them anymore. Just a guess. Big Bear has EZ brackets without the eyebrows.

I don't understand. You just keep screwing the post through the eyebrow and fender and into the subframe until it bottoms out in the eyebrow. Why would the post not not be able to "bottom out"?

Are you saying the post is too fat so that it's bigger than the recessed area of the eyebrow? If that't the case, then you either have to run without eyebrows, use a washer between the eyebrow and the post or as you said, build up the recess in the eyebrows with sufficient washers.

Yes, this is the case. The stock eyebrows have resessed areas for the stock bolt's head to sink into (so they don't stick out past the eyebrow). The new bolts I have, with the button fasteners, won't fit into the resessed area. The fastener is too big in diameter to fit into the resessed area.

It looks as if I must remove the eyebrows (which I like for cosmetics w/o the bags on) OR try to fill in the space.

If I lose the eyebrows, I'd be worried about scratching up the fender by mounting the new fastener straight to it. Maybe a felt washer in between?

If I find a way to sleeve or space out the new bolt/fastener so it fits with the eyebrows, do you think that will leave my bags hanging out too far? The ghostbracket site even references some spacers.

You're only spacing them out about 1/8" if memory serves me. You should be OK unless you load them up with too much beer.

I've bought SS spacers. They come in varous diameters but the ones I have you would have to cut them to length as they are about 1/2 long. Why not just use SS washers?

Bit make sure the bolt reaches to the other side of the subframe.
