Spark plugs 4 Years, 12 Months ago
I am getting close to the recommended mileage for a spark plug change. I was just wondering what is a good overall plug, the gap setting and some pointers on changing them? Looks like I will have to remove the tank to accomplish this...

Yes it's easier to remove the tank. Put the ngk's back in and gap at0.032- 0.034.
You can also put antiseize on the plugs before installing them,or not .
There are seveal different thoughts on that. I do and they come out easier.
also make sure the engine is cold. My 2cents anywho
You could also try the NGK iridium plugs. some have used them and like them
they cost around $10 apiece

Post edited by: Greysnake, at: 2007/05/30 14:21

Good advice by Grey - the engine must be cold or you'll strip out the threads in the head.

I use plain old NGK's. I've tried other plugs but for me it seems to run the best on the recommended plugs.

I went with the Autolite 4164 recommended by many on this board. I changed them at 8,500 miles and the Denso's that were in the scooter looked very good. I probably did not need to change them. I have only ridden a couple hundred miles with the new plugs, but all seems to be good. I put anti sieze on the threads, probably do not have to do that as many plugs already come with it on them. As Greysnake suggested you should do this on a cold engine, and remove the tank. Just a heads up the Denso or NGK are 18mm and the Autolites are SAE (sorry cannot rememeber the size I think 11/16), Gap with a wire gauge at .34 and blade gauge to .32. Torque to 12.7 lbs. , and ride.
