1 more simple fairing question 1 Year, 11 Months ago
This may be a silly question BUT. I was wondering if fairing knocks off more wind than my windshield and lowers ? The only thing i've ever rode with a fairing is my buddys goldwing and thats nothing like a cruiser. I'm thinking about getting one but mostly for the neater radio and speaker look and I don't know if I want to go to the expense if the wind buffeting is no better

My stock shield and bucks lowers gives better protection than my fairing does.

My Stock Windshield alone is better than the MS Batwing Fairing, and when you add in the HD lowers, it's way way way better than the MS BW Fairing even with the lowers! Pretty darn simple, Fairings ain't that great for wind or buffeting reduction, just looks and slightly better at getting wind off your grips. Had I known this, I would have never went with a Fairing, and, I may just go back to Stock with HD lowers.

Wookie,
Thanks for asking your question! I was considering getting a fairing but based on the responses to your question, I'll keep my stock windshield and possibly get the Buck's Lowers.
I have zero interested in getting blasted by a stereo system while ridding my Road*. I prefer the sound of the wind and the roar of my pipes!

I have both and think the fairing is a little better for protection from rain and just as good for wind (I like the toons on the faring also), it all depends on size of the wind screen, I have a 5" screen for cursing around and a 10" for long haul on the fairing, lowers can be used with both...just my 2 cents.

Don't know who's fairing you other guys are running who says it doesn't block as much as the windshield, but I beg to differ.

Just for reference, I went from the stock (medium) windshield and Buck's Lowers to a Dragonfly fairing with Buck's Lowers.

With the stock windshield and Buck's lowers I was pretty well covered, but I still would get a lot of buffeting when I'd wear a helmet. The buffeting was a result of the windshield height, but I didn't want to go taller as I hate looking through the shield (the medium was the perfect height for me as my line of sight was right over the top).

This weekend I took my first longer ride with the Dragonfly fairing (6" windshield - which pretty much matches the overall height of the medium windshield I had). Helmet buffeting was non-existent, even during the 1am mad dash in 50-60mph gusting winds to find a hotel room while the tornado sirens were going off Saturday night (gotta love Lake Erie weather).

I can also tell the fairing is blocking more air from hitting me as I can feel more engine heat than I used to when riding. It's not a huge difference, but it's definitely noticeable when motoring down the highway.

I can say though that the fairing offers a boatload more rain protection. We got caught in a couple quick downpours and other than the very top of my head my upper body stayed perfectly dry. Had I still just had the windshield my hands, arms, and everything from my torso up would have been soaked.

The only negative of the fairing I've found is that it definitely catches more wind in a crosswind and as a result causes a vibration/wobble feeling in the bars as you ride. It's not bad or massive by any means as it's about equivalent to riding with an out of balance front wheel. Just takes a little getting used to is all.

I had a medium WS plus HD lowers on my roadie, but I think that a fairing gives more protection, especially around your shoulders area. The only drawback i've found is that the steering is more hard to turn at slow speeds.

My Reckless fairing with the Yamaha lowers is far better than the stock windshild to eliminate buffeting around the head... I have two windscreens, the 5, and the 8> I ride with the five because the 8 is a lot taller than 8 inches!! I don't like looking through it.. I am getting a new won cut at the glass shop. (lexan) A design of my own will see how it works..
