This is what I did;
It is very easy to damage the fill plug if you use a screwdriver to remove it. I made a tool to remove the fill plug to avoid damaging the slot (which I did the first time I changed the oil using a screwdriver).
Materials:
(1) 2" dia. fender washer
(2) 1 1/2" dia. fender washers
(1) 1/4" dia. X 5" long bolt
(2) 1/4" nuts
electrical tape

Assembly:
Put electrical tape around about 1/3 of the OD of the 2" washer and flatten on faces of both sides of washer. The tape protects the plug slot.
Put (1) nut on bolt leaving about 1/2" to 3/4" of thread at end.
Sandwich the 2" washer between the (2) 1 1/2" washers.
Put washer stack on bolt.
Clamp washer stack with second nut.
Cost of parts is about $2 or less.
Assembly time is about 5 minutes.

Although you won't use this tool much it's nice to have it when you need it. Of course, you can also use just the 2" taped washer with a pair of channel-locks or vise grips but adding the (2) 1 1/2" washers really stiffens the 2" washer.

Some may think that making this tool is overkill but I like my tools.

MS1700,wow,thats a great job you did on your transfer case oil change intstructions,& your correct that the RP lube your showing in pic's doesnt have the corrosive type GL5 extreem pressure additives some other oils still use.

What's the impression of PX3 gear oil? Saw it at Oreilly's and it seems to be heavily endorsed by Sumax.

What's the draw to PX3? I wouldn't use it unless it says its GL-4 compatible. O'Reilly's also carries Mobil 1 LS synthetic gear oil that is GL-4 and GL-5 compatible.

It says GL5. Unless you can find where it specifically states that it can also be used in GL4 applications, I would not use it. There are too many GL5 gear lubes on the market that are compatible with GL4 applications to worry about using one that does not specify GL4 also.

It specifies GL4 on the label.

"API Service Classification GL-3, GL-4, and GL-5"

Just interested in trying a new non-dangerous product. It's synthetic and GL-4. I run RPurp motor oil and was going to get their gear oil when I saw PX3. The lower price was not a draw but I enjoy new options esp if they don't damage and may bring something to the table (e.g. cooling, quiet, wider avail, options, etc).

Not much info online as this is a new product (they all start somewhere, right?). Outside of "syn" and "GL-4" I wondered what the forum may have heard or if there are any red flags in the product mixture.

I yesterday changed the gear case oil.......and " billd's " homemade tool worked great , cost about $1.50 to make. At first it was tight to crack but I was careful not to damage the slot, it worked better for me w/o the tape, once done you get the hang of it ! I used Mobile 1 Synthetic 75w-90 oil ( $8.99 )and put in 14oz which equals about the same amount the manual states ( .42L ); I drained about 16oz ( ? )cause I measured it and the previous owner was a " dealer " service man. I ran it today about 60 miles just to cycle the oil and enjoy the ride Now as I write I'm enjoying some " COLD ONES " in this 105 + heat we are having in the El Paso area !

The tool works and I would personally use a synthetic which as previously stated is good for at leat 10 K miles of riding !

Thanks for the feedback on the tool! Glad it worked well for you.

I used a church key/bottle opener I got from a case of Molsen 30 years ago!! Put some tape on it so I would not scratch the chrome.
