Gotta agree with takehikes and many others. Hikers gear is really good for this type of ride. I agree that we take way too much stuff ...clothes, parts, tools... it adds up. Try not do duplicate too much stuff among the group so coordination is key.

Hydration and cooling is important (recent thread here about hydro vests and bandanas). I did a 516 mile ride Sunday and tried compression shorts for the first time. They worked well, got them at Wal-Mart and they pulled moisture away and cut down on the monkey butt.

Extra light shoes or sandals are good to have to get out of your boots when you stop. Sunscreen, meds, eyewear, visine, Purell, TP, credit cards, $$$, all good.

Other than that keep us posted with pics and a journal. Take some unplanned detours to enjoy this great land.

The only thing I can add is to wear long sleeve t-shirts.They will help keep you from burning and dehydrating as fast. Several 7,000+ mile road trips. Most important, enjoy your ride and experience it to the fullest.

I forgot to add an important suggestion: Do not change or work on your bike at least 8 days prior to the trip. Just change oil and check tire pressure. Long trips are not meant to test a new part you installed.

HYDRATION, HYDRATION, HYDRATION. Even General Patreaus, who was dehydrated, fainted in White House.

Make sure you are peeing at least 3 times a day and the urine is not dark colored.

I fully agree with the minimalist packing. Men do not need much stuff to enjoy life.

Learn some basic rain prediction techniques(Google).

This may have been listed (and looking at your 'image' I am guessing you may already carry this on your bike)- carry a first aid kit of some type and have it clearly marked. I carry mine on the outside of the bike with the bag marked with the Red Cross symbol. Others put the symbol on the saddle bag in which they carry the Red Cross kit.

Also a list of contacts in case of an emergency. I was telling my riding buddies on our last trip that they could just open the contacts in my cell phone to find my sister's phone # and then remembered that I use the locking feature on the phone because of the work connection.

You may want to bring your passport or passcard because you never know when you will get the urge to cross a border.
