Crank scissoring? 1 Year, 11 Months ago
|
|
|
Just curious if anyone has ever seen this on the Roadstar? I've been reading of this issue on some of the Harley forums. Doesn't sound like it's a wide spread issue or anything, but I don't ever recall hearing of anything like that on a Roadstar.
Are the crank halves welded together on the Roadie by chance?

Never heard of it on a roadie. I think it was a bit of a problem with a very limited year model of HD. Not a problem on Roadie, I have never heard of it on a R*

Never heard of it on a roadstar either nor do i know if our cranks are welded or plugged...where i work though we had 2 twin cams come in with cranks that had to be welded, they were both putting out gobs of power and being revved way too high
from what ive seen the problem was pretty limited in HD and as long as you are not looking to put out like 120hp you would be fine so id assume the same for roadies but hey i could be wrong! im pretty far from an expert hah

In the cutaway I saw of the Roadie engine the crank looked cast or forged. I was told but don't remember which. It weighs 45 lbs so I'd think you'd have a hard time tearing it up.

The H-D crank is a 3 pc. deal because it has to be. The rods are roller bearing and are one piece so the crank has to come apart to put it togeather.
The R/S crank is one piece and the rods split as in a standard auto engine. They use split plain bearing inserts, again same as auto engines.
The one piece design makes it impossible to scissor, But it is possible with the 3 piece crank by the nature of its design.

Of course you can scissor a regular crank like ours....used to do it all the time when I crewed on a funny car!!! All it takes is a nice load of fuel, a wee bit of extra overdrive in the blower and stand back!
Seriously, with our crank you would have to work at ever breaking it, it would take a whole lot more HP than any of us are making.

Thanks for the info guys. I just assumed the Roadie set up was the same as Harley's. Didn't realize the Roadie has a one piece crank.
