Proud new Papa 4 Years, 11 Months ago
SO here's my deal, I currently own a 1982 Yamaha XJ750J (Maxim) and a 1983 Honda Magna V65. I get a call the other day from a friend in VA and he says, Wanna buy Thunder?
Thunder, is my new 2000 Roadstar (1600)
I am taking my vacation next week to drive down with my wife and ride Thunder home to Massachusetts. Hell of a test ride don't ya think?
As with any new bike, I tend to look into the standard trouble spots and try to keep my eyes open to them. With the Magna, it was the overheating issue and popping out of 2nd and 4th gear. ( My bike has neither of these) With the Maxim, it was the main sterring bearing.

So the point of all this is, should I be looking for any particular "common" problems with the Road* before I set out for a 600 mile ride?

Also, I know the bike was meticulously maintained and babied. I also already have about 100 miles in the saddle on this bike alreday and I will ride it for the week I am there to better familiarize myself with the bike before I head home.

One last thing, once I get this thing home, I'm gonna need some new riding buddies! Anyone up for a ride?

-Dave

Dave,
Congrats on the new ride and welcome to the clinic. The main thing you should check into is whether or not the tranny recall has been done. Mine's an '05 so it's not an issue but I've heard/read alot about it here as it pertains to all the 1600 models. Someone that's dealt with it first hand will be able to give you more details.
Congrats and good luck!! Ride safe!!
In The Wind,
Aaron

Thanks for the welcome.
I have seen the posts about the tranny mod and will be sure to find out if it has been done.

One thing I did not see was an explanation of what the problem is?

Can you offer a brief synopsys of the problem/result?

Thanks,
-Dave

Welcome and congrats

Give a dealer or Yami customer service your VIN and they can tell you if the tranny recall has been done. The 1600's had a weak oil pump gear that some had problems with. There is an upgraded gear available. If they still have to do the recall you can have them put the gear in at the same time. That way you only pay for the part. Some folks had a problem with the rear fender cracking from the way the Roadie wags it's tail at idle.

There is a quick way to tell if the recall has been done. There is a "punchmark" above the VIN on the neck to indicate that the service was done.

I knew someone would pick up on the fact that it is a Yamaha publication.

Shortly after I joined this forum, I took your advice Doc to verify that the recall had been done on my motorcycle. I contacted Yamaha Canada, and from them I got this information. I saved it for just such an occasion.

Daysonthunder:

Congrats on the new baby!

As was already mentioned, do check with your dealership to see if the tranny recall was completed. You'll want to address that one immediately. Keep only 4 quarts, no more and no less, in the crankcase.

For your ride home, don't pass any chrome or accessory establishments because the Road* tends to countersteer in those directions. Don't embark on any roads that are curvy, twisty or windy WITHOUT a ful tnak of gas, because the Road* loves to play on those. Finally, avoid Hardleys (not a typo) because the Road* just likes to embarass them. You don't want to gou out of your way making enemies on your first day out!

Good luck! You're gonna love her.

The only helmet sticker I definitely want to slap on says:

"I love Harleys. I wait for them all the time."

My wife won't let me buy it. 'Fraid I'll end up in morgue somewhere.
