Common Issues: Banging on Bumps / Headlight Rattle 4 Years, 11 Months ago
Roadies:

Two common annoyances of the Road* are: 1) a strange banging noise emanating from behind and below when traveling over certain bumps, and 2) the headlight rattle.

Has the banging noise ever been positively (I've heard that it can be elusive) identified and a remedy or remedies suggested?

What are some effective way to stop (or lessen ) the headlight rattle?

Thanks.

I have the same noise in the rear ...but on the headlight...I stuffed mine with cotton rags...getting the wiring and fuse holders away from the bowl...no more rattle at all!

Ah ha! Finally something I can offer an answer to. The banging noise coming from the back is the chrome drive belt guard. If you look at the bolts for it, you'll see that the one on top has a rubber grommet in it that allows the guard to move back and forth. Wiggle it and you'll see that it hits the frame. I took the grommet out and bolted it back down.....doesn't move at all, and no more banging.

I am definitely going to check that out on my 05 R* Silverado. Have had that mysterious rattle in the rear since day one.

Thanks for the clue!

BlkCherryBomb:

Is there any practical reason for having a flexible belt guard? I wonder why Yamaha designed it that way if it doesn't serve a useful purpose.

How many of those rubber grommets are there?

Yours is a great fix! You get + karma.

Thanks.

Take your seat off, that (17mm) bolt and nut towards the top. Tighten the shit out of it. I might have gotten 1/16 of a turn or less. No more bang over the bumps!!
One of my fork tins used to vibrate. It somehow just quite on day.

06midnightstar,

My guess is that the grommet is there to keep the guard from rubbing against the drive belt as it spins. I remember that mine did not rub after taking the grommet out. However, if yours does, you could always put a flat washer or two underneath the guard to elevate it, and then bolt it down. It's been a while since I've done this, but if I remember right, thats the only bolt with the grommet in it.

Thanks for the karma!
