grips 1 Year, 9 Months ago
So I bought a new set of grips for 1" controls. I managed to hammer the throttle tube in about 3/4 of the way using some WD40 and a dead blow hammer. Now it's stuck...3/4 of the way in. Won't go in any more, won't come out no matter what I've tried (WD40, liquid wrench, 2 of us pulling as hard as we can)...suggestions...anyone...

Heat it with a heat gun and squirt W40 in it before you do the pull like hell. Why did you have to beat it on what size bars are you trying to put them on? What size are the grips for? You shouldn't have to force them on.

Are you sure they didn't already come with the throttle tube installed?

So...I managed to get the throttle tube out of the new grip...in about 2dozen pieces . After getting it out I measured the inside diameter of the new grip and it is 1", while it appears the OD of the tube is 1 1/8", I guess hence why it bound up 3/4 of the way down. Guess it's time to head down to the Yamascrew dealer and see if they have any throttle tubes.

Does anyone here know if all manufacturers use the same tube, with the throttle cable notches in the same places? Mine had threads on the end for the end cap. If so I would far rather go to my local Kawi / Polaris (non-Victory) dealer, way better customer service.

Both your grips came with an ID of 1"? If so, you're not getting the throttle side grip onto your bike. Throttle sides are larger, like you found out the hard way. With that said, Kawi's of the cruiser variety use the same grips, at least according to the Kury site.

I went with Milwakee twins 1.25" T-bar drag bars that taper down to 3/4" inch for controls. The grips I bought were 2 different sizes. The one grip just squeezed on the L side which would've probably measured somewhere around 5/8" ID while the R grip measured 1" ID that just didn't fit over the stock tube which must be around 1 1/8" OD...didn't measure it before I tried to stick it inside and destroyed it trying to pull it out .

Gotcha. Never seen 1-1/4" bars that step down to 3/4". So did you have to do some fiddling with the hand controls to get them to fit tight?

I didn't have to do any fiddling at all, the stock controls just mounted right up with no effort at all. As for checking the grips, I did in fact look and there was nothing inside, that's why I figured I needed to insert the throttle tube into them to get it to work.

No i'm in the hunt for a throttle tube...$65 from a dealer for a chunk of plastic tube and the rubber grip that I don't want . Anyone have one they're not using and wish to sell ?

My bad, they are a 1 1/4 bar necked down to 1" for controls, and the grips I did buy were for 1" bars...that don't fit
