Close encounter: DEER!!!! at 60 mph 1 Year, 9 Months ago
Went for a leisurely ride late Sunday afternoon and on the way back home, running around 60 mph, a buck jumped out of the ditch and we became intimate!! All I saw was a blur coming at me when I hit the brake and he crossed just in front of me. When I hit him, his a$$ end had hunkered down and I clipped his a$$ end with my left highway bar and floorboard... Happened so fast, I didn't have time to think about it much... I stayed upright,, was josseled just a little and kept on going.. I looked back in my left mirror and he was scrambling to the other side of the road heading EAST like he'd been shot... I stopped a mile down the road to regroup... and no damage, no blood, no hair... no nothing.. WHEW!!! That was close... I have always been told, that if you encounter a small animal, just hit it straight on... avoid it if you can, but if not.. just hit it and ride it out... but a 150 lb DEER... well that's what happened.. just rode it out... So folks, the deer are moving this time of year.. so keep your wits about you and be safe!!!!

Here in Ohio the deer are EVERYWHERE! Plenty of woods and fields for them to quickly end your fun. Had to almost lock it up the other day when one popped out in the middle of the day. Be careful!

Thinking about doing this mod to do my part in thinning the herd.

In my over two million miles of driving (Various vehicles mostly a Class 8 truck) the advice of hit it right on and don't swerve too much is absolutely the best path, You did the right thing, congrats for the discipline you had at a crucial moment. Everyone should have that mindset when riding, deer, raccoon, dog, whatever.

I just spoke with a race team who wrecked their race car rig swerving to avoid a deer, 30K in damage, ripped two axles out of the trailer going off road.

Most deer related crashes I have heard of and seen, more damage was done swerving. A lot of doubles flip swerving to avoid deer. (Think of that when your passing them.)

The wife and I went for a ride last weekend. I seen the deer on the side of the rode and slowed down as quickly as I could. The deer was standing 2' from the edge of the rode. By the time I got the bike slowed down it just sat and looked at us as we went by at 5 mph. All I was thinking is don't jump out now Now with the corn fields so high you wont be able to see them coming....So keep your eye's open and ride safe.

my dad and his girlfriend hit a deer at 60mph last year on his ultra classic. both went down...he got off easy with a couple broken ribs. She was pretty messed up but lived. Totalled the bike. He is almost spooked to ride at night on the country roads now, and I dont blame him.

Be safe and get your deer rifles out!!!
