Some audible chatter from the valve train at certain loads and rpms but no knock. When I ran loud pipes even the chatter I mentioned couldn't be heard but that Indian sure is noisy. Antique or not I think it should be quieter. Starting them was easy.You retarded the spark, kicked once to prime, tilt the bike to the right so the gas would run into the cylinders, kick once more to start. The right hand turns is because he's not used to a foot clutch on the left.
