May be a dumb question, but........... 1 Year, 9 Months ago
I was cleaning the bike today and noticed something I've never noticed before. The axle through the front wheel is hollow. I could see all the way through it to the other side. Is that supposed to be like that? I've never really paid attention to it before, but it looks very strange. Thoughts? My bike is a 2006 R* 1700 by the way.

The hollow axles are stronger than solid axles, not to mention lighter.

I have found theres no such thing as a dumb question on here when it comes to the RS. You can get just about any thing answered here about your RS. And I've learned to ask questions or look it up in the forms If I dont know for sure.

Correction: If they are metallurgically identical, they are lighter but not stronger !
(Please don't make me prove it. The formulas are complicated.)

Hey, my wife said the same thing when she was looking at my ear! Does that mean I'm stronger?

I am ready, calculator in hand. No one said same metallurgically identical. I have axles from gsx1000r and they are hollow and light weight. Nor are they magnetic. They have to be strong for that application. What metal is it made from? I don't know. Tubing is stronger than bar. That is why they use it in fencing, roll cages, aircraft frames, and antenna towers, etc.

Interesting chart found online. At about .6r the tube has the same deflection resistance as a solid bar. But it does not seem to indicate that the tubing is stronger than a solid bar. Now for the same weight, tubing is stronger, but not for the same diameter.

The scale on the graph shows the ratio of the deflection of the tube to that of a solid bar as the percentage of wall thickness, 100 T / R, varies. The right scale indicates the tube's percentage weight of a solid bar. Three pipe thickness are referenced on the graph; schedule-40, 80, and 160.
