In my short experience with the Roadstar, it seems as though the R does not like to be lugged at all. I have had a lot of experience with sport and dirt bikes though; and extra RPM's are easier on the motor.
With my roadie, the gas mileage seems to remain pretty much the same. As long as your keeping the revs to a reasonable level that pertains to your ride, a lot of the time the extra RPM,s will not use much more fuel than a higher gear that forces more load on the motor.

Rule of thumb: the faster you go the quicker it burns, (the engine)...

I go for some where in the middle of the rpm range. I don't have a tach yet but I think it is about 2700 rpm. Fifth gear on the highway means I might be speeding in the 55 mph zones, right on in the 70 mph.

If yours is a 1600 (pre-2004), you have slightly longer legs per gear. If you are in an area where 55 is the limit and you adhere to it you may find yourself stuck between gears more often than you'd like. One solution is going with a smaller front sprocket. Different sizes are available, maybe one from a newer bike would suit you (32 tooth vs 33) or you can find them at 31 or 30 in the aftermarket. Going smaller may slightly alter fuel economy, but give you batter accelleration and a more suitable cruising rpm...

Re:High or low rpm's is one better than the other? 1 Year, 7 Months ago
I thought it was my riding style creating the MPG issue. But after reading this thread, I see that it may be a situation with the bike. I have an 08 Leftover that I just bought 2 months ago. It now has 800 miles on it. I am getting just over 200 miles per tank. I thought maybe I was riding to much in the upper RPM range. Then I did a trip this weekend, all highway, and ended up with roughly the same number. Is there something I can "tune up" easily, or should I take it to dealer to fix (under warranty) thx

If you're getting over 200 miles per tank without dipping into reserve, you're doing good!

If you are getting 200 miles to the tank I wouldn't change a thing!! Mine will not do near that riding at 70 mph.

I tend to keep it in 4th until about 60, sometimes more. i don't like lugging it and think it runs better in a higher RPM range, also believe it's better for the motor. I average about 42mpg, so it's good with me!
