I can see where one might think an equal amount of plastic would do the job. However, plastic BBs are less dense than ceramic dyna beads, and I would have concerns that they may not hold their position in the tire as well as the ceramic beads.

I ave used, Dyna Beads, Equal, Air soft pellets and golf balls as balance beads, I say stick to Dyna Beads, Equal is too small, and can get stuck in the shrader valve, I am using that now.
Air soft pellets, You can hear when going slow and seem to take a little longer to find thier spot.
Golf balls I used in a Class 8 tractor and are out of the question for bikes.

In a pinch Air soft pellets will do.
