Transmission recall, don't fall for the extra cost 1 Year, 10 Months ago
|
|
A fiew days back there was a member who recounted his experiance of having had the transmission recall work done. In His post he told of how the Dealer threw in a valve adjustment for a hundred some odd dollars, along with I beleive some other minor extra. If you think about it, the Yamaha Corp is paying the Dealer a set price to dissasemble, fix and assemble the bike per Yamahas recomendations, and the parts are also furnished by Yamaha Corp. In the course of re-assembly, all the componants are assembled and the engine has then completed the recall, and liabilty effectivly ends.
Yet there was something fishy with this members story, in that the Dealer charged for a valve adjustment as an extra 'while they were at it' , a deal...... There is NO deal there, I'd say that the member was ripped off, because in the course of re-assembly, the adjustment of the valves is just a matter of the overall assembly just like re-installing new gaskets where the diss-assembly has effectivly destroyed the originals. But this bussiness of charging for a 'valve adjustment' is trickery, sneaky, and unsound Dealer practice. At this point, I'd give this Dealership a 'FAIL' to be sure.

Unfortunately, a valve adjustment is not part or required for the tranny recall. However, since the heads are already off, there is much less labor involved. I can see maybe the dealer charging for 1/2 hr labor, but no more than that. The mechanic is doing work, and should be paid for his services as well. Usually, most dealers will have a minimum 1/2hr labor charge, even if it only takes 15min. I don't know what extra work was done nor the few extra's nor the exact amount or what the labor rate is. So I am referring only to the valve adj. I know most dealers will not charge for HC pistons changing, nor for the oil gear up-grade or for install of the Barnett clutch pressure plate, or for a front pulley change.

Adjusting the valves are not a requirement of the tranny recall, $100 is a little excessive for the amount of additional time required though.

I'm possibly on the verge of getting a 2000 Roadstar, but the current owner doesn't know if the recall was done or not. He didn't know anything about it. I believe he's the 2nd owner. If I do get the bike, is there a way to find out if it was done? And if it wasn't, will Yamaha still do it, even if you're not the original owner? And if they won't, does anyone know what it costs to have it done, assuming it's one of the affected bikes?
BTW, the guy only wants $3850.00 for it, and it's got 13,000 miles on it. Seems like a pretty good deal. It would sure be nice to move up from my Honda!!

Call Yami, or a local dealer, and/or look for the single punch mark over the vin tag by the steering head on the frame... and i quite sure it's still in effect. And the deal you spoke of looks pretty good, I'd probably go for it!

call the dealer with the vin number and they can tell you if the recall was done,if it has not been done yamaha will do it no matter how many owners the bike has had.

Look on the frame under the front part of the gas tank, your VIN number will be there. If there's a 'mark' above your VIN between either the 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th (can't remember) then the recall SHOULD have been done. However call YAMAHA Customer Relations (800) 962-7926, press "1" for Star Specialist. Explain to them that you bought a used R* and would like to know if the tranny recall has been done. . . .make sure you have the VIN. . . .then give them your mailing address . . .this way if there's any more recalls YOU'LL get the notification not the PO. Also ask them if there's any outstanding recalls that pend for your bike. (Other than the T-Bars I know of no other).
Good Luck
