It's not just a HD thing. Funny, my son in law bought me one of those gremlin bells when I had my 650, not more than a week later the bike was totalled in a parking lot. I guessed it worked since I was not on the bike when it happened! I did however get my Roadie blessed this year, I have a crucifix hanging off my handlebars left side. I have personally given away at least a dozen bells and keep a couple in my saddle bags at all times so if I meet a rider that deserves one and does not have one I have one to give.
