Fuel Gauge and Tank 1 Year, 8 Months ago
Went looking for an answer but can't seem to find a thread with this problem in it.

I have noticed several members have commented on their fuel gauge not working properly or not at all. There have also been some suggestions to checking the electrical connection near the bottom/rear of the tank.

My gauge has always been a little flaky but for the most part it has done what it was supposed to. About two weeks ago I noticed that it was reading incorrectly. It showed me with 1/4 of a tank when it was well over 3/4 and then it would climb up and slide back down during a ride.

This isn't the right after fill up change I am talking about but something else is taking place.

Today coming back from lunch when I got on the bike and stood it upright I head something sliding around in the tank. Can't see it but I'd like to find it.

Any ideas? The tank is full and I rode all the way in today with an empty reading and the "fuel low" telltale was blinking the entire ride as well.

My odometer is still working so I can track my fuel that way but I'd like to know what came loose inside the tank and if I stand a chance of repairing it myself.

My understanding is that the light blinking is actually a code. I think you can find out what code it is in the shop manual. I think five blinks means a bad fuel level sensor. I had this issue and then i changed over to a different tank. While dong so, i tested the sending unit with a multimeter as it is simply a potentiometer (variable resistor. So I clean up the contacts, put new wiring from it to the harness connection point. It was during this process that i found out that using the red kill switch resets your ECU. Now if i have this issue, I simply use the kill switch and I always get a full sweep of the indicator upon start up. I hope this helps.

Sounds like you dropped the float off the sending unit arm to me or the arm itself.

This sounds right. When I stand the bike up you can hear something moving with the gas in the tank so it does sound like the float has come apart from the sending unit.

Is this accessible from the fill port or from the fuel line connection at the bottom left of the tank?

I am assuming here but it sounds like I'll drain and remove the tank but what then?

Drain the tank, remove it and remove the fuel shutoff valve. Your fuel sending unit is bad and needs to be replaced. Very easy job and your gauge will work fine after that. Buy one online or the dealer will steal you blind.

Before I do this does anybody know if there is a special gasket that I will need to replace between the tank and the flow valve?

The petcock has an o-ring style gasket that should be alright to reuse.
I've had mine off a couple of time w/no problems.

It's an O ring gasket about $2.50 from the dealer. 4X8-24512-00-00 You might want to check when you order as Yami has changed some of the numbers over the years.

It blinks 8 times then pauses and repeats. Anyone know the key to breaking this code?

Yep if I remember it means your fuel level sender is bad.
Mine started doing that on my way to Fl. in May.
Still does it as I haven't bothered changing the sender in the tank.
I just use the trip meter to figure out how much gas I have in the tank.
