round 4 with #*&$%@"/? manifold leak 1 Year, 7 Months ago
Just put the manifold on for the 4th time trying to seal the P.O.S from leaking. used new oversize rings with hylomar this time and will fire it up tomorrow afternoon. The last go around I used the oversize rings with silicone grease and It was a little better, but far from cured.

I looked every surface over probably a dozen times and could not see anything that would cause a leak If I was putting 500# of pressure on the joint I'll bet it would'nt leak, but I realize that vacuume is a real pain to seal. If this doesn't do it I will lay her up for the season and on goes the 42 with the metal manifold. I have never had a problem sealing a manifold on anything else and this thing is making me nuts

Good thing the I still have the Triumph

Are your flanges surfaced? If they are try going back to the OEM 0-rings and put flat washers on the bolts to spread the torque over a wider area. Also use the hylomar outside the o-rings and torque your bolts to 10ft lbs. BTW where did you find the hylomar I have looked and can't find it around here?

Hi Curt,

Yes, I surfaced the flanges on a flat surface plate and it didn't take much to clean them up. I have a set of stock rings at the dealer and just have to get over there to pick em' up. I also put washers on the bolts that fit without alot of clearance.

I got the hylomar at advance auto parts and they had it with the other gasket sealers. If you can't find it, get back to me and I will send a tube.

I don't understand why this thing won't seal I could see if it was rigid, but by being flexible it should conform to the mating surfaces.

Regards, Coot

I think on some of the manifolds if they have the oversize o-rings the aluminum flange tends to bend when the bolts are tightened down causing the flange to bow leaving the middle up to high to seal. My 05 sealed real good with the bigger o-rings but my 07 has a leak. Both are done the same way so I am going to go back to stock o-rings tomorrow and a gasket compound of some kind and see what happens.

Curt
Check the Napa on Mill St. It is listed as pt# Bk85249. I looked it up and they show it as a Balkamp product.

Well Dave I just got back they didn't have it and it is special order from Amarillo. BUT while I was digging around in my sealer box guess what I found? I bought a pair of Pingle Petcocks for my bike and the give some goop to put on the mounting block before you put it on. You'll never guess what it is "Hylomar" and there is enogh left in it to do the manifold I think.

Sorry Curt,
I guess we can't always trust what they say they have when we check online. I went to the Napa website and looked up the store in your area typed it in and they give me that pt# as if they had it.

No big deal I had just enough Hylomar left from the Pingle petcock to seal both ends of the manifold I also went back with the OEM o-rings so the flange won't buckle. So far it seems as if it has worked I will know more when I take it for a ride now. I may do the sme thing to the 05 when I get ready to put it back together I have a Pingle for it also.
