Not a tech tip, more a tech question 1 Year, 7 Months ago
I bought a tach for the R* yesterday. It looks great. However it seem to only register 1 cylinder. I know we have two coils and the probe is meant to be attached the the negative of the coil. However, The right side coil has a good ground wire but the left only seems to have positive. Looking at the wiring for the coils, each cylinder has a coil each suggestion a positive and a negative (ground ) for each. Does the ground on these coils both terminate at the right coil or do i need to take off the left coil to find its ground?

The inside/right wire/terminal on the left coil is the negative/ground. The coil faces forward. The right coil faces to the rear, and the inside/left terminal/wire is the ground/negative.

Oh forgot to mention, you need to wire to only one terminal.. I used the left side coil because of ease of access.. The ground wire on your tach goes to a good ground on bike, and the hot wire goes to hot on ignition switch...

I did not buy a bike specific tach. I was told it would work well on my bike and it seems to run at half the actual RPM leading me to believe it need to be connect to the other cylinder. I will try to attach the other side of the coil as well because the schematic in my manual show them as only having the hot wire in common. It also state that there is one coil for each cylinder furthering my belief that i am only catching the pulses of one cylinder.

Thanks for the great info. I will let you know how it goes.

If this is a car tach, it will NOT work properly as is. Probably need to contact the tach manufacturer for directions on a dual-spark ignition systems...

Paul I think you have purchased the wrong tach there are two types of ignition systems on bikes. The dual fire where the plugs in both the front and back fire every revolution of the crank and the single fire where only the plug in the cylinder that is on the compression stroke fires. If you can't return the tach for the correct one there is an adapter that can be used to make it read correctly. The green wire on the tach goes to the orange wire on the left side coil.

There is a real debate on that subject Paul as for myself I feel we have single fire ignitions others say we have dual fire. All I know is both my tachs work just fine on both my bikes. Once I get the 05 together enough to crank it I am going to find out for sure which one we have. It sounds like you have purchased a tach that is compatible with the older dual fire HD's. If at all possible contact the people you bought the tach from and explain what is happening and as them if the have the adapter. You can also do a search on e-bay and google to see if you can find one. I will do some checking as well. As for your offer sure thing drop by any time you here.

Sure hate to get into this again! The tach I purchased from e-bay is for a Harley dual fire and it works great on my Roadstar. Jona bought one also and it works great.. I don't know if it is in the terminlogy or what? It does say that an adapter is needed for a single fire system, but mine has no such adapter. I believe two different members contacted Yamaha tech support and got two different answers. Knowing where you got the tach and from whom would help... Will not get into the technical aspect of the Roadies firing system, because I have read member explanations until I got a headache.. They are a bout 50/50 on the question. But if you orderred the 47.95 tach off of e-bay, that says it is a mini harley tach for a dual fire ignition it will work on your bike..
