100% complete oil exchange system 2 Years, 7 Months ago
Was looking around the web tonight and ran into something called the scavenger complete oil exchange system. It gets everything out 100%. First you drain the oil the normal way thru the two drain plugs. Then you hook up a hose and a cam filter of some sort. Stick one end of the hose into a new bottle of oil, start the bike and the old oil in the tank empties. Think of a blood tranfusion. Only for a M/C. Appears the only make it for HD's. Going to call and see if the make one for the R Star.

So why by this when you could just screw the new filter on remove the return oil pipe let the old oil drain into a container and achive the same result.$70 saved and a oil change that takes half a day to do.I dont think any motors would have ever crapped themselves yet because of the little bit of old oil left in the motor, and if so they'd be every where, some of the old cars we had never got an oil change.maybe with a HARLEY (woo woo) you have to do this to keep them going, however R* will do 100000 miles anyway

It makes a difference if the Harley filter is on the return side of the oil flow. Ours is on the pressure side.

If you want to flush the system some then after draining the oil, install the new filter, install the tank drain plug, leave the crankcase plug out, add a few quarts to the tank then start the engine and let the oil from the tank run out the crankcase drain. It'll only take a few seconds to empty the tank so don't let the engine run too long.

I'm perfectly O-K with changing the oil the "old fashioned" way...

If you find out that there's a system for the R*, let us know. I'd pay for something that allows the full replacement of oil. Frankly can't believe that you cannot drain most of the oil for an oil change. Ridiculous design but I guess that's the way it's designed.

Apparently it works on the Harley because they said the filter is on the return side. The Road Star filter is on the pressure side so if you try to interrupt the filter flow the bearings wouldn't be getting any oil.

I posted a way to do it on our bike if you don't mind wasting a couple of quarts of oil. After you get through though you'd have to drain the tank again and then when adding oil add the amount recommended for an oil change without the filter.

Not something I'd care to bother with every oil change especially if I was using $8/quart synthetic.

Also, I don't know if it would hurt the return pump not having any oil to pump for a short time but it's something to think about.

Ours will drain out 4 qts, but a dry fill is 5 qts, so when we drain, we're leaving 1 qt in there each time... and it doesn't hurt a thing.

No it doesn't and if you think about it the same thing happens with your car. There's oil left in all the oil passages, lifters, top of the head, oil pump, etc.. Just change it regularly and everything evens out.
