ALL SVS riders read please. 1 Year, 4 Months ago
All SVS RIDERS.. lets start putting our stories here so we CAN compare whats going on...Just a reminder...04' midnite silverado, cobra pipes and dj jetting, jets are 37 and a 175 ( what cobra called for.),3rd slot on needle, pms 2 out. 75% back road, 60 to70 mph avg. 25% in town driving. Have had SVS symptoms since late last year. When it started the bike was bone stock. Got real bad this spring. 2 shock treatments helped it but it always came back. One day a valve finally stuck ..open or shut?? whichever. Stealership did a comp. check, 150 lbs. on the front cyl. 90 on the rear. so they pulled the valve covers off and adjusted it. Ran great!.. for 300 miles or so. It came right back. Took it back to the stealership and told them I wanted it fixed..etc. etc. after a couple weeks I got Yami HQ to pay the labor.. even though I had no warrenty. Well, after the tear down...everythings fine so far. I thought that the rough running when cold was normal.. hasent done it since. It used to get up to 4th gear then just dog out.. putt around about 1 mile then come back. Also dont need the choke anymore to start it. They cleaned the valves up and reamed the guides.. said thats all it needed. I'm hoping since I was the second owner and the oil was 'half an inch over the hash mark on the dipstick when I got it, that the high oil leval was the culprit for the first 3000 miles. I'm at 3.75 qts now, oil is right in the middle of the hash mark. FINGERS CROSSED!

Speaking of oil levels I was positive I totally drained my bike 2 weeks ago, the manual says 5.3 qts complete change, so I added 4.5 and I'm an rch above the top hash also. Just checked it a minute ago, now I need to drain some out.

I have a "'05, it started shortly after I had installed Speedstar pipes. I knew nothing about this at the time. At the end of the season I took it to the dealer to get it jetted. they had problems getting it tuned. Yamaha told them to run the ring free in it, ran fine and they tuned it. Then my warranty ran out...
I was happy until this spring when the attacks began again. I asked a tech about it and he said run ring free every 4-6 tanks. He told me if I had a warranty they may have been able to get Yamaha to pay for the valve job. Nice.
I seems that ring free shouldn't be the answer to a mechanical issue. Fine to clean it up, but not a fix. Either way, it's so bad now that on the very next tank it loaded up again. Am I to just run additive in every tank. Can this stuff cause your pipes to discolor? I have a gold blotch halfway down my front pipe from the same time I ran the cleaner the first time.
Could it be the jetting needs to be leaner?
Anyway, I love the Roadie but if I wanted problems I would have bought HD.

Ring Free or any top end cleaner is just a temporary fix, especially for the 05s. You need the dealer and Yamaha to step up and fix it permanently.

Do a search on SVS and sticky valve.

I did search, it lead me here, thats how I found out so many other had the same problem. Just so I'm clear on it before I ride my Silverado through the showroom. Does this problem have anything to do with jetting or is it just the valves and springs just don't cut it when you change the pipes.. They told me it was the oil level too, then they changed the oil. Something is loading it up. Is the only answer the to do the valve upgrade on it?
I'm really not sure whats up. I haven't seen anything else on the Internet about it. I do appreciate any advice.

There's a number of other posts which detail others folks' experiences. Make sure you check them out.

The 05 seems prone to SVS ... even when stock. The valve seats are too narrow and have been improved for the years following .... but it still appears.

You could put it back to stock and then get the dealer to go to bat for you. Yamaha will not do much without the dealer confirming that there's a problem which cannot be fixed with Ring Free.

Even out of warranty, Yamaha has authorized fixing the problem.

Thanks, I just found the other posts. The only comforting thing is knowing I'm not alone. WOW, there are tons of them.
I'll go talk to the dealer on Monday. The ring free isn't even an option at this point.

Thanks again Doc!

hey Jab... stay on them! Mines an 04'. no warrenty. like I said,my problems started as bone stock, I put the pipes on and jetted after I had the problem for 6 months.. Yami said thats what caused it. BULL.... After a month of hollerin' at 'customer relations', they agreed to pay all labor to pull the heads and clean the valves and ream the guides..they were a mess. Like I said before.. hopefully from the high oil level, which wont happen anymore. One thing that saved me was the reciepts from yami for ring free the year before. Also my 'stealer' couldnt make any headway with corprate.. when they told me that, I got on the phone one more time with HQ' and told them how dissapointed I was with yami and thier product, that I would be telling people about thier defective bikes..hehe and that I owned a semi and a 53' foot trailer that would have YAMAHA painted across the length of it with big yellow lemons all around it and how they sell defective motorcycles! that's when they put me on hold for a couple minutes. When they came back they said they would be glad to pay the labor of the tear down , clean it all, valves, guides etc.. and put it together, I would have to buy the 16 dollar head gasket. I agreed. So even if the stealer has no luck ..keep on calling HQ .. they get tired of hearing from you, as they keep everything on file.

Thanks, heading to the dealer now. Do you have a # for HQ. I know the dealer will just send me out the door with a brand new bottle of Ring free!
