Re:MPG??? 6 Years ago
rejetting probably won't help if you're still stock.. (oops just looked back) and just adding pipes the bike probably shouldn't have been rejetting... if the person who put on the pipes had it rejetted, it may be to rich which will kill your gas milage... when your have the stock jets adjusting the PMS might help ... MIGHT... remembering that the throttle isn't an on off switch, but rather a graduated switch might also help (joking of course - I love laying on the throttle on mine)... seriously though, your PMS might be set to rich, can you start your bike without using the choke (enrichener)? if so then Maybe.. keep in mind also that during your initial break in period, you won't get as good a gas milage.. (crap, I'm having problems this am - I see your past that) once you've got 3000 miles on it you can upgrade to synthetic oil and I noticed that I got a little better milage... also don't rev / blip you throttle at stop lights.. sounds cool, but sucks down gas... also make sure you're filling the tank to the same level every time.. a little difference in gas makes a huge difference in gas milage... I've used a lot of Maybe's in this post... regretfully thats often how it goes... there are a lot of factors involved... such as: how heavy you are on your throttle... how fast you are running ... flying at 75 80 hits my gas milage, buzzing around country roads at 55 gives me great gas milage... if I'm hot dogging at every stop and red lining up to the speed limit... really kills my gas milage... I'm sure your hight above sea level will also affect your gas consumption.. and depending on what voodoo dance you do around your bike will also affect it.. to learn more about the voodoo dance, look up a few posts about tweaking you carb... when working on these bikes you will often hear from your mechanic, "well it works now..." you ask "what did you do different?" "nothing" which translates to (I did the voodoo dance to the right this time not the left) ~Guido

Post edited by: davehrn, at: 2006/05/15 07:31

I have a 05 Roadie 1700 .. stock with a windshield.

I typically average 42mpg, that is doing city driving and then highway up to about 72mph.

(180miles before fuel light, then flip to reserve for another 25ish)

If I push the speed up to 75-80 on the highway, she sucks the gas and I probably get 20 less miles per tank.

(160-165miles before fuel light, then flip to reserve).

That sounds typical.

I know I get around the 45 mpg range.

This is anotehr twist in the MPG question. I just replaced my 03-1600 ignition module out for a 05-1700, should I see any difference in MPG? I've got 135 miles on this tank so I will check it and see, still a little under half a tank by the guage. Just wondering if the guys that have did this swap have seen any hugh differences either way good or bad?

Post edited by: Jreed, at: 2007/06/29 12:25

I just put a BAK on my 2000 MM and went from getting around 42 mpg to 51 mpg. I have V&H pro pipes. a Dyna 3000 set at 5000/ 36A. Jetted with 167.5. washer c clip in 3rd groove spacer 2 washers. PMS at 1 7/8 turns. It does have an occasional back fire, not as bad as before I took off the AIS, but when I decell down a hill I can get a few pops. Over all I'm very happy with it.

My ’02 Silverado was getting around 50 mpg when I first got her. Took off AIS, cut and bored the pipes and the mpg went down into the mid 40s. Had a crash, put on HK sidewinders, jet kit installed, K&N filter and mpg went south of 40. Cut holes in the air box fore and aft and re-jet again. Best I could get was 41 mpg. I started adjusting the PMS a ¼ turn in at a time and at ¾ turns from where ever it was at I’m now getting 51 mpg. I run about 60-65 most of the time; more when I’m late or just need to feel the speed. This machine is so damn sweet!

Hey Scott give that PMS 1/2 to 3/4 turn and that poping will go away, my buddy had the same problem and yesterday I gave it 3/4 turn and BAM no more poping on decell.... Mine is set at 2 3/4 turns and I dont have any poping.
