again,coalstoves..your input is valuable to me as is everyone else's here..im pretty sure the folks at Maxflo would not be making the actual filter element themselves..

See here is were my confusion comes in,, below are the jets recommended and supplied by Barons and these are actual Mikuni Jets with sizing based on the flow thru the jet,, the specs below conform to the guidelines I have learned so far about jetting a R* meaning it is easy to go too rich, these sizes are just moderately over stock jets which in my case would be a 165 and according to experienced recommendation the stock jetting is even sufficient enough for aftermarket exhaust which on most bikes almost always means re jetting the only time re jetting is recommended for a R* is when an Air cleaner mod is done .

99~03 Models
167.5 Stock pipes - 170 pipes w/ baffles - 172.5 pipes w/o baffles
04~07 Models
170 Stock pipes - 172.5 pipes w/ baffles - 175 pipes w/o baffles

OK

Now to the Maxflo and Maxair jet kit,,, Maxair says the jets are sized to Mikuni specs and to use the 190 jet,,, whoa that’s big,, real big unless of course it is not sized to Mikuni spec but is actually a re branded DJ Kit and then using the widely accepted close comparison chart a DJ 190 is between a 177.5 and 180 Mikuni still big but much closer to Barons guidelines and accepted practices of other riders / tuners,,,, but big still .

The Needle

The needle is important in all this cause it should be matched to the main jets,, the stock Mikuni needle has no adjustments and is good for stock, the Barons is proprietary to Barons is made of titanium and has a different number of slots than the DJ needle also I have read the DJ needle has just about the same taper of the Barons, the difference is the DJ needle is shorter by the thickness of 1 washer. So if set-up with clip on same groove, the DJ will be a half step richer than the barons. I have also read that some time ago DJ came out with a new needle which was a 6 groove design, their old needle was a 5 groove design, but I think also the old one was a bit thicker diameter as well. So what is a Maxair needle its relevant to performance and economy and should be matched to the jets which in the Maxair are supposed to be Mikuni but for all its worth start to seem like a re branded DJ kit
Thunder MFG. is another company that sells an aircleaner upgrade for the R* their jet kit is clearly a re branded DJ kit .

Dynojet kits are not many peoples favorite for R* or any other bike I have worked on, and I would prefer not to use a DJ kit and if I chose a BAK or Maxflow or Thunder mfg. aircleaner then I would prefer the Baron jet kit using the titanium needle and actual Mikuni jets all with the hope of avoiding a fuel hungry bike and an overly rich carb situation .

I am raising these questions and putting forth some opinions in the hopes of also learning something from the been there done that guys and not to discourage using a product or to condemn someone else's theories or choices but sometimes I come off wrong so PLEASE understand I'm just feeling around for some input so when I hit the checkout button I'm happy right up to and long after the test ride .

Interesting.

I am the third owner. Everything on this bike was stock. When I pulled the jets, I had a 182.5, a 35 and a stock needle. I did nothing to the carb until this install even after I put the Dooleys on I did nothing to the carb. I cannot verify the needle size of the MaXair for you, but if I have to go back in I will be sure to make a comparison.

I happen to have a Barons jet kit and will use it if necessary. I will give MaXair every opportunity to resolve any issue I might have, although I dont have any and I have to pay attention next time I fuel up to track the mileage. I have a short trip planned on Vets Day.

Odd that the biggest jet in the Barons kit is a 175.

Think you better head over to the tech article section and look at were and what jets you are seeing I think your confused as to which is which .

But you are correct 182.5 main and a 35 pilot are OEM specs

No, its not falling short. But I am always looking to upgrade. Any chance to upgrade I will. Its (HSR42) on my bucket list... first things first.

Gotcha !

But I cant help say one mans upgrade is just another mans modification, I've always been impressed with Yamaha engineering their performance attitude and reliability an longevity so when someone suggests taking a core piece of the fuel induction system and changing it I scratch my head especially when it such a nifty device as a Constant Velocity Carb, Performance modification almost always involve a trade off and ditching the CV for a direct slide is no different .

Aside from the loss of the TPS and timing advance or the hassle associated with getting it working again I have heard some folks feel the HSR's can be a bit "touchy".  That is, small changes in the slide throttle can give instant changes in speed, which can feel jerky and cause vibrations or chugs in the driveline and others have said that holding steady speeds is sometimes tuff because of this sensitive nature and others report that snapping the throttle open suddenly, can cause the engine to cough and stumble until the revs can pick up enough to achieve sufficient air speed through the bigger opening to restore the venturi effect. At which point you finally take off .

Sometimes I need to remember what is important on a lazy Sunday afternoon on top the bike in the middle of nowhere a nice smooth ride and lots of distance between gas stations or some bars on a graph from my latest Dyno run. Then I'll decide if its an upgrade or a modification but odds are good I'll stick with the CV and a good air cleaner and Jet & Needle combo that brings the CV out of its EPA induced coma .

I am open to education also so please feel free to tell us what ya feel are the advantages of the upgrade / mod.

Its easy to tell the Barons from MaX's kit. I have them separated too. But I will take another look at the Tech section for a refresher.

Coalstoves.. again you are posing the same questions i have been asking...why rejet if you dont need to..?? I am using a Cobra jet kit..i chose that when i put the Cobra slashdowns on my 07 midnight..unaware at the time that the cobra kit needle is thicker that a regular dynajet and they recommend the 37.5 primary and a 170 main.. i went with the 180 because i cut open most of the rear wall on my stock airbox and i am using the K/N replacement filter..both which are letting in far more air than the stock airbox alone.. more air would likely (just my opinion) need more fuel to stabilize the mixture in order to burn correctly....a member told me that the Cobra kit was designed to work with the jetting that came with it..so when i tried to go back to the stock 35 primary jet my bike would not even run.. so to cut to the chase, when i order the maxair i will use it with the jetting the way i have it now and if it runs like Crap i will just go up to the HSR 42.. or rejet with the kit that max sends me just to find out why.. I have also ported the intake so that changes the mix a bit too.. the bike pulls like a freight train now !

I wonder why diferent companies use diferent numbers (i.e. 190, 175, etc.). Do those numbers equate to an actual measurment of something?

PS, I just installed the Max Flo, along with porting the intake and jetting per their instructions. Runs great, has plenty of pull on the bottom end. I've very happy with the performance and looks...and sound, for that matter.

As far as gas milage...it has gone way down, but that is just because I have to gun it from light to light now . Going on a longer ride this weekend. I'll try to keep track of it and let you guys know where I'm at.
