Bartfish, when it shuts down do the lights and other electrical items reamin on? or does the whole electrical system shut off? If its only the engine that shuts off, I would check the shut off switch at the right hand controls and check the relay that is connected to...

Got an 03' with 20 k. So far so good. Besides visually checking to make sure there's no pinched/worn/loose wires. I'd also voltmeter test kill switches. Past that it might be a defective/loose part. That's the way I'd go.

hey guy's

wow that was fast!!!

while riding the the bike shut-off (lights are on)

1st breakdown: shut-off @ 60 mph -had to put in
neutral to restart. motor would shut off putting
in 1st gear (had to trailer home)

had to coast to the side of the road

installed new clutch switch & kick stand switch

can start bike put in 1st gear ride into 5th gear
bike shuts off. pull the clutch in hit the start
button (nothing happens) have to put the bike in
neutral first to re-start. rode home!!

everytime the bike shuts off (it will not start in any gear)
other than putting back into neutral to restart!

If the bike only starts in neutral then the neutral safety switch is good. I would be looking at ignition system or fuel system. If the fuel pump quits pumping it will do that. You can bypass the fuel pump with a piece of fuel line to the cab from the tank disconnect the fuel pump leads and ride it see if it still shuts off. If it does then the fuel system is good and it may be a bad connection in your ignition system.

Neutral safety switch kinda makes sense...but the "relay unit" controls all of the "engine kill" components. Wiring diagram shows #9 a relay or otherwise mysterious box with 2 relays and 6 diodes. Any one of the diodes failing may cause the condition you describe I'm assuming because of back-feed through the wrong circuit.
My 2.75 cents worth (formally a nickel) Hey Curt am I making any sense???? This is my own deduction

I don't mean to be a smartass here, but I speak from experience.

Do ya remember to turn the fuel switch on?

Or could something with that be funky?

A bad diode can kill the fuel pump when least expected...I'm thinking that the neutral safety switch may be a symptom and not the cause
