catalic converter? 1 Year, 6 Months ago
hey guys, hope someone can help. my father inlaw has a 2003 ford escape. it had a bad vacume leak and wouldnt pull itself. i got to lookin around and couldnt believe what i saw. the egr valve has a cast metal elbow that bolts to the intake , it was blown apart!! i took it off and after more inspection, it got so hot, the cast metal melted and blew apart!! i went to part store and got another one and put it on. started it and ran for bout a couple min. and the new one started steaming. i turned it off and the engine was barely warm, but the egr was so hot u couldnt touch it. i could swear years ago i heard something like this and it was the catalic converter? it also has no power. when running, you can put it in gear and hold it to the floor and it will barely move a foot. think it is?

The hubs says to run it for a lil while and to look under the escape, and if the catalytic converter is glowing cherry red, then it is indeed the catalytic converter.

I'd verify with the dealer if the cat is still under warranty. If I remember right, they come with a 100,000 mile/7 or 10 year warranty.
I had one go bad at about 96,000 and Ford replaced it for free.

k. so dealership said its not still under warranty (102,000 miles ). they said the cats for it are built into the exhaust manifold and have to replace it all. ford quoted... ready... $2,800 to put new cats on it!!! . everywhere else i called was within bout $300 dollars of each other. friggin stupid!!! my father inlaw said screw it. hes not puttin that much into it. so hes havin it towed in and tradin it in. from what everybody told me, ford escapes are notorios for the cats goin bad and catchin the car on fire and burnin it down! man i love my simple truck. ive got a 87 chevy silverado 3/4 ton 4x4. plain and simple
