Interesting!

It's been a while since I had my bike stock but I never remember it running so rich that it emitted black smoke ..... and I certainly have always had to use the choke to start it. My buddies bike would also be set up too 'lean' for your service man.

Well, the next step it yours. You can either lean it out or leave it as is.

It would also be a good idea to check your float height first. Then see if an adjustment of the PMS helps. In fact, if you can screw the PMS in all the way without the bike stalling, then it's another indicator that you're too rich on another circuit.

If these don't help, then you'll need to determine the jets and needle setting and it looks like the service man may not be of much help. Unfortunately unless you have a set of jets, you may need to tear the carb apart twice (unless you don't want to ride for a while ); once to see what you have in order to buy smaller jets and then to tear it apart to install them.

The Cobra jet kits are made by Dyno Jet.

If you decide to lean it out, hopefully Gram can comment ..... he's the resident 'Carb guru".

Doc

EDIT ... just re-read you message and noticed that "They put on a Cobra Jet Kit and it did include a new needle. They also used the Mikuni jet". Cobra sells their own jet kit but I believe the jets in the kit are from Dyno Jet. It is not recommend to mix needles and jets from different manufacturers (Dyno Jet vs Mikuni).

And I see Gram beat me to the punch

Post edited by: DocShadow, at: 2005/07/05 14:45

Those are all great points Doc, he might also have to turn in his duration screw on the carb to fend off the huge squirt of gas, just a suggestion...

I bought my '05 Midnight Silverado from the same stealer. I have taken my bike to them 3 or 4 times, before I said forget it, I'm doing it myself. It smoked, it built up carbon, and now I think I have a sticking valve problem. IMO, ProCycle is a horrible dealer with even worse customer service. They give me the run around every time I go in there. Seems like once they sold the bike, their job is done....

I've been bitching about this since February, as Doc and GRAM can probably attest, since they have helped me tremendously!!

Good luck in your jetting, as I'm curious to know the solution. I, however, have the V&H Longshots and just last Friday put on the Baron's BAK (hoping their jets would be much better than ProCycle's). Which dealer is your "local dealer?" Just curious, because I may need to take it in to get the valves all cleaned out.
