Thanks for the great picture! Is the inside pipe that you cut connected to the flat plate further inside the exhaust

Yes, the part that you see the slots cut into is the inside plate, and it is attached to the inner pipe, I believe in the same way that the cone is attached to the inner pipe. the outer cone is cut off by using a dremmel to cut the inner pipe (the only hole you see when stock) 1/2 inch in. If you go to deep inside, I'm sure you'd cut the pipe before it attaches to the innner plate, and the cone would not fall out, but your inner pipe would be subject to coming apart. (just as if you were doing a stage 3 modification to you pipes. ~Dave

Post edited by: davehrn, at: 2005/09/23 14:17

Well, I did the slots today and, MAN, you guys were right...the sound is unbelieveable...deep and rich and none of that "foomphing"....took the dremel and made a cut just inside the tailpipe and the cone came right off (oversimplified, it took some time)...then dremel cut very close to the baffle.

Got out the drill and the cobalt 1/2" bit and made some extra holes and then used the carbide dremel bit to cut slots...kind of screwed up the lower pipe...not as symmetrical (got a bit too close to the "outer" pipe) as the upper, OH WELL....

Finished it off by dremel sanding the slots and it sounds GREAT!!

Took about two hours all told with the pipes on the bike...if you do it, be sure to shop vac or grab the shavings with a magnet frequently...oh, and wear eye protection

Regards, Ted

Oh, ya, good point, I taped a small piece of gas hose to the end of my shop vac so that I could run it into the pipe and clean it out. You did it faster than I did, took me 4 - 6 hours, but that also meant experimenting with sanding, drilling, using up all my sanding drums for the dremmel, going and buying a new metal cutting bit, ect ect ect... I know my slots arn't even, and I don't think anyone will notice... unless of course, they get down on their knee's and look inside.. ~Dave

Thanks for the picture and the tip. I now have a custom exhaust by Dave!....and it sounds so nice.I used a Dremel carbide cutter #9901 for the slots and several cutting discs for the baffles. If anyone is low enough on the ground to see the rough edges, chances are I ran over them!
