Numb Hand??? 4 Years, 10 Months ago
Here lately my right hand has been going numb while riding,to the point I can't hardly use my front brake. Yesterday, I went on a 40 mile trip and had to stop and pull over at a gas station about halfway, just to let my hand rest and get the feeling back into it?

Do y'all think wearing gloves will solve this? Does other Riders here suffer with your hands going numb??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Frank

You could try a padded palm glove but you may have to switch handlebars. The position of your arms may be resulting in a nerve to being pinched.

You could try adjusting the tilt up or down on your bars and see if that makes any difference.

Frankallen,

Might sound crazy, but picking up on what Doc said, you may have a pinched nerve. I have one in my neck that, when it acts up, I get tingling and numbness in my right hand.

Try this and see if it helps: Next time it happens, tilt your head to the left, then to the right, like your taking a crick out of your neck, then straighten your neck up as much as possible, tucking your chin in a bit. The idea is to get the weight of your head directly over the spine. We tend to lean our heads forward, which puts a lot of stress on the cervical (neck) spine.

I know it may sound odd, but it works for me every time.

Frankallen,

It depends on why your hand is going numb. For many the numbness comes from gripping too hard and restricting blood flow. First just try relaxing your hand at least occasionally. I use the Kuryakan ISO grips with the Throttle Boss and no more issues. If the numbness is from vibration, first check you engine mounts to make sure they are tight. Everything on a big twin can shake loose and make a buzz. If you find all OK then padding in the gloves may help. All riders should always wear gloves when riding. The first thing to hit the ground is your hand and it will take the full brunt of impact. Gloves can save a lot of tender feeling in your hands if you should have the unthinkable happen. JHHO

You could also have carpal-tunnel syndrome, which is a pinched nerve from a tendon on the inside of your wrist. Try riding with your wrists lower (hands bent "up", so to speak) when you are riding. Also, try riding with your pointer and middle finger resting on the clutch/brake levers...this helps to. Also cuts down on your reaction time in cases of emergency. Just a thought. - Rod.

I had the same problem. I do have carpal tunnel.
Tried everything padded gloves different riding position etc.
Finally borrowed a throttle rocker (cramp buster) solved all my problems.
I bought two so I would have an extra. Two other buddies are riding with them now.
One rides a BMW the othe a Harley so we know it was not the bike.
Hope this might help

i had the same problem with an old honda shadow, pull back handle bars. nothing
like the road star. i agree with musky, adjust your tilt. if no help, you might
have wrist(pinched nerve) problems.

I have the same problem every day... I figured I'm in line for carpal tunnel surgery soon I switched to Kuryakyn ISO grips with the ISO Throttle Boss which help .. then added a throttle lock and used that when the numbing gets unbearable. and last but not least riding gloves with the padded palm without the finger tips....

Chiropractor was the only answer for me, see him when I need him. It is typically my left hand that go's to sleep. After several visits to the good back/neck cracker, I'm back to my old self. BB
