Dead hydraulic lifter and cam 4 Years, 10 Months ago
Good evening Gentlemen, I recently had a recall done on my 99 R gearbox. Since I got the bike back I have taken 1 ride of approximately 200kms. Upon returning the bike emmited a rattle from the rear overhead gear that I thought was a badly adjusted valve clearance - not so.

I returned it to the workshop (bike by now running very badly) thinking that some lazy wrench had just botched the adjustment but was advised after some investigation that the exhaust lifter on the rear cylinder had failed and caused an enormous clearance to open up at the rocker (hence the noise and shitty performance). Moreover, the cam lobe was also damaged to the point of needing replacement. Apparently the bottom of the lifter that contacts the cam was severely worn (chewed out was their term) and this is what had caused the failure. They said that it is totally unrelated to the recent work and the timing was purely coincidental. This is a fairly reputable shop but I am interested in the input from the 'clinic as to whether there in fact could be a connectio or are R's prone to this particular problem. Note: the other cam and lifters where in perfect condition.

Thanks and hope you can shed some light

Post edited by: Reperio, at: 2007/07/07 04:30

Hmmmm I think this is the 3rd, maybe 4th bike I have read about in 2 weeks that have had this same thing happen after the tranny recall. We seem to have a rash of "coincidental" going around. If it was good before they got their hands on it and broke afterwards it seems pretty clear but I don't know how you would prove it. A lot of shops are reputable when you are giving them money and walking out the door. Things change when you ask them to fix what they screwed up.

I thought it was the same guys posting over and over

It's rare to get that kind of damage under normal conditions. As I've said before, there were a number of lifter failures in 00 - 02 but even those were not common.

As Musky has suggested, I also believe this is related to the way the dealers are doing the tranny recall. It's too much of a coincidence that after the recall folks are having the same problem.

Makes me thing I'll skip the recall.
