Almost Persuaded 4 Years, 10 Months ago
I went to the Harley “stealers” today and almost succumbed to the wiles of a pearl white and gold Electra Glide Ultra Classic . It was their end of model year specials. It sure was pretty…and not a lot of extras (like what else do you need on that one), $1000.00 off, and 2.9 % interest for 3 years or 4.9 for 5. It was tempting, but I thought of all the research I did before I got my 06 R*, why I bought in the first place, and all the good comparisons from those of you that have had both bikes, and I just turned away. Course I did go back, and look at a new Classic for a few $$ less, just to make sure that I didn’t need it. They are balanced so nice, but they do feel a bit smaller than the R* and my knees were up higher than on the Yamaha….almost feels like its a little sister. Course I have a few extra days to really think about it since the low interest is on until the rest of the month…will need you rely on you guys to help me just say no.

Just call it a bad dream and ride your Roadie tomorrow that should cure it. I know the HD doesn't have near the torque your bike does.

For whatever its worth here is my two cents on your dilema.
I have always been impressed with the Road Star since it first arrived. I have owned over 60 bikes over the last 30 years. Always buying and selling and checking out all the bikes I can get my hands on.
On July 5th i traded a Kawa ZZR1200 for a Silver addition 2003 Road Star. Figured what the hell. My main bike that I swear to as the best bike ever made for all around riding is the GL1800 Goldwing. I ride the GL1800 almost every day.
I have owned 7 Harleys over the years, including Softails, FLH's, Road Glides and FX's. The Road Star is in a class of its own. Many of my friends are hardcore Harley drivers. I have the oppurtunity to ride many custom bikes with loads of horse power.
Not many Harleys can cruise at 90 as easy as the Road Star. the Road Star handles 3 times better then Softail Harley's. And as good as the baggers or FLH style Harleys. In my opinion there is no comparison of the Softail harley versus the Roadstar when it comes to handling. Let's not forget how much it cost to get 73 horses out of a Harley. At least an additional couple grand for the average owner. The FLH Classics and similar bikes are fun to drive for a while. But if you are real serious about riding distance don't screw around. Buy the Goldwing. If you want the cool cruiser, stick with your Road Star and screw the image BS.
Roadstars engines last twice as long as Harleys while sustaining more consistant performance for the life of the engine.

Of Course this is just my opinion. But I have talked to many people regarding this bike before I ever ended up owning one. Hope this helps.

The Road Star will never be a tourer, I don't care how many fairings and hard bags get bolted on them. That being said there are some awesome Ultra Stars on the Delphi sites, and I must say the fella Eric has the nicest one I've ever seen. But, under all that stuff it's still a cruiser and always will be.

I love my R* but will probably go the tourer route in a couple years, when I do I'm going to take a serious look at the Venture. From all I've read they outperform the FLH and once again you get more bang for the buck. I wish I hadn't heard about the low interest rates and cash off HD is offering, it's going to take some willpower to stay away for the next month. I've been known to make "impluse" purchases in the past and can see me getting sucked into buying an Electra Glide.

Hey, Cass, I'll make a deal with you...just send me the $10,000 or so extra you would spend over a new Roadie, and I'll send you the "I got mine at Hacienda Harley-Davidson" tee shirt and license plate frame I got when I bought my Road Star there...neither have been used...

In all seriousness, I understand how "itches" go. But I have a feeling you bought your R* for a reason...

Whatever you end up riding--ENJOY!
