who has painted there engine? 1 Year, 4 Months ago
thinking about painting the engine black on my roadstar..

who here has done it?
what did you use, and most importantly how has it held up, is it flaking, peeling, chipping?
engine temps stay the same or go up?

I painted the engine on my last bike a 750 virago, used discount autos dupli-color high temp header paint in a gloss black and never had to redo it as it held up very well, never checked temp change but riding in central fl never had a problem

Biggest factor for how well it sticks will be cleaning/prep of the surface.

I have seen good jobs done painting motorcycle engines, and I have seen the after-effects of a bad job first hand (peeling, loss of gloss, etc.). Correcting a bad job, or one that fails is a nightmare. There are a lot of variables involved, but mostly it boils down to a perfect prep job without the slightest bit of oil or grease left on the surfaces, and using a quality product made for the job. I would just say this- most of the positive comments I get from people about my Roadie involve the engine and the way it looks. The only thing that doesn't seem to 'flow' right is the air filter cover which looks like an after thought. But everything else looks really bitchin' (showing my age here ) just the way it is. It's a massive engine and really looks great detailed out. I wouldn't paint it myself..... but that's what makes the world great, creative differences. Good luck!
