Re:Almost Persuaded 4 Years, 10 Months ago
Well put Doc and BB. I didn't and probably will never know as much about bikes as you guys. I could have bought a Harley, but I am not riding for a ego or to fit in a click. I ride because I love to ride. I took a chance on a used Road* because of the support on here. I read the clinic for 6 months prior to getting my Roadie. I will keep it for many years, heck I drive a 1995 pontiac grandprix. Its been my main vehicle for almost 10 years. I just realized I have had my car longer than any girlfriend or wife...

I may not be able to fix my woman problems but I know with the help I get on here my roadie will be with me for many years....

Send me the bill guys I might need marraige advice soon....

Relationship advice is much more $$$ than motorcycle advice!

Somebody said it once here, and I've used it myself: I can't buy a Harley because I can't afford all the tee shirts!!
Now that's good humor!BB

Re:Almost Persuaded 4 Years, 10 Months ago
Thanks guys, all good replies. Doc, you're right, as far as what I usually see in a post for help. Big Bear, you've a good point too. I think it's the rollercoaster ride I've been on that's got me frustrated. After losing over 7 grand to a guy named Bear Latimer of Kodiak cycles in Kentucky in 03 (Warning plug there), I've been making loan payments on nothing for the last three years. I couldn't take it anymore and started looking to get a bike. I will admit that I worked within a price range. Lots of research later, the R* was it. Remember, the Yamaha dealer that I had been telling I wanted a Midnight* ended up telling me I didn't want a R*. Coaster down. I went to check out another shop and there it was. One of the best looking bikes I'd seen. (Is this where I should have posted a pic?) Coaster back up. My wife handed me an envelope on Xmas, she had put a couple hundred down on it to hold it. Coaster way up. I went back, had to hear it run with those pipes. Bike wouldn't idle. Dealer said it was plugs, nothing wrong with carb. Coaster ride sorta in middle. I should add, it was dusty and I couldn't see the fine pitting developing on the chrome everywhere. I finished the deal and was very excited. I picked it up in March and it was filthy. I got it home, washed it and then a couple days later in the sun noticed the pitting. This was after I noticed chrome peeling on the billet fender accents. Coaster a little down, pissed at dealer. I took them back and the dealer was very quiet about it all, as if he was pissed at replacing them. As the next few weeks ticked off, I began really getting into this bike. Coaster up again, things looking good. Then, headed out for an evening ride, noticing it not sounding right and bam, dropped rear cylinder/fouled plugs, dropped bike. Also oil leaking around rear push rod tubes. Coaster back down. Since then, I've learned that everythings right for SVS. I know, I can't be worried about it, but it does bring my coaster down some. And guys, I really think most if not all of this has been brought on by the dealer and not the bike. That's why one of my options might be to trade it tin to another dealer on an 06 and start over if that's what I think will get that coaster back up. When I pick it up tonight, I've got to let the dealer know how I feel about everything and see if he'll warrant future problems related to the motor, as I'm paranoid about SVS. Have you noticed?

Geesh, sorry for such a long post, but it's hard to respond to multiple thoughts in few words. Oh yeah, after a few weeks on the R*, I went to a Harley dealer and like a lot of you guys, walked out feeling pretty good. Bikes do seem smaller and fit funny.
Thanks again guys and I'll let you know how it's running.

Well T-bone, I understand your frustration! Get your scoot back, and if you need help, let us know. Like the good Doc said, this is the primary reason people seek each other out, for help. After all, this is a clinic. Hopefully, your headaches are behind you. Keep us informed.BB

Thanks Big Bear. I do have a question for the list. Whether R* or any carb'd bike, after the right jetting configuration is found, does it stay that way, or does the jetting need tweaked for climate changes, etc..?

Thanks again.

I had a similar situation, got a serious itch and here is what I did.

I kept my Roadie and bought a nice little Sportster 883 to play around with. I got it for just over 6K out the door and have just started chipping away on adding some bits. Actually, it is a really fun around town bike, the EFI and rubber mounted motor have changed the Sporty into a very nice bike....

That being said, the Roadie is 3 times the bike, bigger, faster, better built, etc... However, they both are fun in their own way.

You really want to think, check out the new 2008 Soft Tail Rocker, it is on the HD website now.

Last request, Yamaha, please offer me and EFI Road Star!

I hate to say this and you don't want to hear it but I think the dealer where you bought this bike has not been 'honest' (to put it politely) with you. I'm sure he knew of the problems with the bike before he sold it to you.

I wish you good luck in you dealings with him. I think you should take Cliffdog with you.

Once you have jetted the bike for your area and riding style, then you can leave it alone. About the only time you need to change is if the temps in your area vary from 80 F in the summer but down to 32 in the spring/fall. In this case, you only need to adjust the PMS a bit.

Hypecat, I agree with you on that request. I don't understand why they've left it carb'd, unless I'm missing out on some cheaper or easier way to make it ours type thing.
Doc, you're right. Then again, instincts gave me a funny feeling about buying a chrome machine from a motorcrosser. Dust, not idleing. My wife had said to let the money down go to waste if I wanted, but I did not want to discourage her effort to help me get a bike. I asked questions and got standard sales type answers.

I what i'm learning, as well as searching my own feelings, maybe trading in on a newer Midnight* is the answer, if staying with Yamaha. I really do like the bike.

Thanks again everyone.
Now then, where'd I put Clifdogs number.

From one Tbone to another, there's not much that I can add to what has been already stated here. I will say however, that you run across a bad apple every now and again with everything. The bike can be made right, sucky dealerships respond to squeaky wheels and bad press, but if they suck, they usually work to continue sucking after you've been "satisfied". I'm mechanically inclined, so I haven't seen my dealer since I rode mine off the lot. Hope it all works out with the bike. The only thing bad I can say about mine is it sits still far too much (my fault of course)..

Post edited by: Tbone21, at: 2007/07/10 09:41

My first (03' 1600 Silver Edition) R* and I love it despite sounding like the lifters wanting to do a lap dance on me. To say it's customizeability (?) is endless is an understatement. It holds the road beautifly, cruises at 80 without even trying and, if they made a heated cab for it, I'd be riding 365 here in Wisconsin. Got lots of compliments from those who've test rode it. Definitely a keeper.
