Erbman02, you once posted about checking the regulator...what should the continuity be when you check the red and opposite top wire?
thanks for any input on checking the rectifier..

To check out the charging system, check out the alternator output and then check out the regulator output. Under the front end of the seat and in front of the battery (remove the side covers) are several plugs. The alternator is on the right front of the engine the wires come out from under the cover headed to the rear, they go under the cam and decompression solenoid area and up just in front of the frame vertical post. The plug is white and has 3 wires. disconect that plug and with an ohm meter check for continuity for all 3 pairs of wires, and chiek that there is no continuity between any of the wires and ground. If there is no continuity for any of the 3 pairs of wires or if there is continuity between any wire and ground then the stator is no good. If those checks are good then with the engine running check the AC voltage for the 3 pairs of wires. The 3 voltages should be close to the same and should increase and decrease with increase and decrease in power. If that checks out OK then the stator is fine.

Plug the wires back in and check the DC voltage at the battery. The battery needs to be fully charged for this! with the engine off the voltage should be a bit more than 12 with the engine running the voltage should be about 14. Depending on the electrical load, the voltage at idle may not be more than it was with the engine off; but it should increase with power to about 14 and should not go any higher. If the voltage does not increase above the basic battery voltage or if it increases much above 14 then the regulator is no good.

If all of the above checks are OK the the charging system is g"ood to go."
