What is the problem with the old lifters? Dished bottom or internally collapsed and won't pump up?

As long as they are not dished or scuffed on the bottom and the cam don't show any damage you will more than likely be OK with just lifters. Make sure you pump them up before installation. Some pump them up in oil or trans fluid and some use kerosene. Also wouldn't hurt to use a little assembly lube on them.

================================================

Why are you replacing the lifters,is it due to worn out dished bottoms or is it because they are collapsing making noise?

If they are worn down on the bottoms what brand and grade oil were you using?

Sometimes you can get away with it with flat tappet cams but more often then not the cams are also worn/damaged enough from lifters wearing out that they will wipe out new lifters.

And if thre new lifters do wipe out that will send even more metal shavings/particles intoi the oiling system of your R* which isnt good.

But whatevere you do make sure you use a good grey moly type assembly lube past like crane mfg's on lobe and bottoms of lifters but not on the siders of the lifters that get oil only.

Also make sure for breakin of new lifters (maybe cams too) that you are using bike oil that has the proper zddp lvl that's critical for breaking in ft cams thats also required for ongoing protection post ft cam/lifter breakin too.

That's where some people get into trouble over miles/yrs when running non bike oil like pass car/truck oil that no longer has enough zddp in to properly protect ft cams long term in bike and classic car motors that have old school flat tappet cam & lifter setups.

Your past experience is a pretty good indication of what will happen with the Road Star.

If it's a real low mileage bike and the cams look okay then it'll probably work. If it's high mileage and you think the cams look okay it's still possible you'll experience the same problem you did with the cars.

Once you get to the lifters there aren't that many bolts left and the cams are out.

correct me if i'm wrong. Most of the guys that have done this mod use a yamaha R1 6 piston (not sure what year) caliper & try to use a larger front rotor. if you take a look @ jamies bike, you'll see a single rotor instead of dual rotors.
