Why was that a fail ?

If your in control of your bike and you downshift instinctively, how can that be bad?

I agree with Gram unless it was a panic stop. Doesn't sound like the Advanced Safety Course I took. Well maybe Sunday your wing will be better and you can ace it now that you have done it once.

I shift to lower gears to help slow down, do it on the sportbike all the time.
It's called engine braking and I see nothing wrong with it, alot of fun with a
slipper clutch too I guess the penalty was for not following instructions ?
BTW How did they know what gear you were in?
Good Luck on the retest

40 plus years of riding and raceing. when I had to take the test I ziped through practice coruse with no problems. only one not to put foot down in figure 8 box and scraped the peg in the tight curve. the instructer comes over and says I see you know how to ride but you need to back off, you are intemidateting the rest of the class. well when I take the test he docks me 5 points for going to slow, he just did not want any one to get a perfect score.

Good luck on your next try, just do what they want and you will pass!!

Re:45 years of riding, 1 Year, 4 Months ago
I had to reapply for my motorcycle license about 15 years ago. I took the riding portion on my Yamaha XS850 which was a bike that had a high center of gravity but was well balanced when moving above 5 mph. Part of the test was to make a tight lefthand turn without going outside the cones or putting a foot down. Everyone else that was there was taking the test on a rented Honda SL 125 that some guy rented to people for that purpose but I was determined to pass the test on my own bike. The high center of gravity got me off balance and I put my foot down so I failed the test.

The following week I tried again and I got to the same point in the lefthand turn (the last part of the test) and again I lost my balance so this time I leaned the bike in a little more while I blipped the throttle and let the centrifugal force carry me through the maneuver, which was probably the only way that bike would make that tight turn. The DOT tester told me I passed but then he shook his finger at me and said "but you be careful".

At least you get a Do over. Wear something flashy when you go back and the chick won't be there to distrac the instructer.
