Any 6 Footers Using A Mustang Seat? 4 Years, 10 Months ago
Are there any 6-foot or over Roadies out there using a Mustang seat?

If so, do you sit "on" or "in" your seat? How do you like the seating position? Being closer to the tank, do you feel cramped?

I got spooked by all the feedback on the Ultimate seats, so I'm trying to hedge my bets on our new seat upgrade.

Thanks for any help.

I went to the Mustang seat this spring. I am 6'1".

Long before I upgraded the seat I moved my floorboards forward using the Lightning Performance kit, and I have the Baron Big Johnson handle bar. With this combination it is like sitting in my LazyBoy. For my height, I don't know if the Mustang would be as comfortable without having the extra room on the floorboards and the bars.

At first I found it moved me forward and I didn't like it. But, since I had spent the money, I decided to keep trying to see if I could get used to it. Now, I am quite happy with it. My wife went for her first ride on the passenger Mustang seat just this past weekend, and she has never been happier.

I have the Mustang double seat and driver backrest combo. I have had it about 4 months now. I am 6.0 feet tall, with a 32 inseam. At first the seat felt short like I was not getting the support under my thighs that I was used to on the stock seat. The feeling of being up on the tank is not one I experienced with the Mustang. You feel more like you are in a saddle and not sitting up on a wide bench. It takes some getting used to but I can sit all day and still want to go some more. I have ridden over 400 miles in a day with no real issues. I used to get about 200 on the stock seat and was miserable.

I love it, but I have somewhat short legs compared to others of my height.

I'm right at six feet, you definitely don't sit down in the seat but it's not like you're sitting up on a phone book either. It does change your position over the stock seat and it's noticeable. It took me a couple hundred miles to get used to the new position and kinda break the seat in. I am slightly more forward so I did purchase the Yammie mini tank bra because I was afraid my legs would rub the tank too much over time. I have the riders back rest and find that to be a great addition and my wife is much happier with the Mustang pillion over the stock one. It's thicker and wider so it accomodates the female anatomy better than the thin narrow stocker. I find the Mustang to be a much nicer looking seat then the Ultimate as well.

I read all the seat threads and find them to be very broad in opinion, you get conflicting opinions on seating postitions, etc., amongst the same seat. Some with the Ultimate say they sit back and down, others have said they sit up and forward. So who the heck knows what is true? I think the only way to truly find what fits you is to try them all out but I know thats not practical or easy to do. I went ahead and got the Mustang knowing I could always sell it and recoup some of my investment, there's always folks looking to buy an aftermarket seat. I wasn't prepared to drop serious coin on an Ultimate, I know people rave about them but how much of that is some not admitting they just spent a crap load of money on something that's not all that?

I don't know if that answered your questions or not, feel free to holler if you need anything else.

Can you elaborate?

Thanks.

Hmmm... Well, I DO have Silverado bars, which are supposed to be slightly longer than the Roadie bars, but I haven't moved my floorboardsand I'm not sure that I want to either.

it moved me forward and I didn't like it.

What didn't you like about it, the position or the way it felt?

Thanks.

We're about the same dimensions.

I'm trying to understand what you mean here. Do you mean that it felt like you were sitting on the front part of the seat? Are you tlaking abouty the height of the seat?

Does it feel comfortable?

Thanks.

Easiest way to explain is look at the Mustang seat in my sig pic and then look at the stock seat. The stock seat is like sitting in a Wok (shallow pan) and the Mustang has some support for your lower back. Maybe I'm hyper sensitive to change but it did take a slight bit of getting used too. Anything was better that the stock seat though, they should send those to Gitmo and use them to torture the terrorists.

Also like Bob said, there seems to be less support under your thighs, it's no biggie once you get used to it. I may extend my floor boards because right now I feel like my knees are above my hips, it's not that big of a deal but I have a screwed up spine and sometimes that position can irritate it.

Re:Any 6 Footers Using A Mustang Seat? 4 Years, 10 Months ago
The Mustang was different, and different takes getting used to. It seemed really firm at first, but now is quite comfortable. Where I used to get "numb butt" after only 45 minutes or so, now I can ride without getting the numb feeling.

I think the biggest thing to get used to was that I felt like I was sitting more forward. Again that took a little getting used to, and now it is comfortable. I am happy with it. It is the only aftermarket seat I have sat on so I can't compare it to anything else.

Re:Any 6 Footers Using A Mustang Seat? 4 Years, 10 Months ago
'06,
It's funny you should mention Mustang seats. I've had one on my Vulcan for about 8 years now and have loved it from day one. So a year ago in June I added a Mustang seat to the Road*. Now, a year and about 10,000 miles later, I can't say I've been real thrilled with it. My wife loves the passenger seat much more than the stock, but from mine and my backside's viewpoint, I can't say the same.
The Mustang seat definitely "locks" you into position (closer to the tank), whereas the stock seat allows for plenty of "wiggle room", both front to back and side to side. And as one of the other's mentioned, it's cut narrower, so it hits my thighs in such a way that is very uncomfortable, at least for me. On this past trip of 3,300 plus miles, I grew to almost hate that seat!! I thought that it'd get more comfortable as it got more miles on it, but so far it's no better than the day I put it on. So now I'm running a "hybrid" seat!! After cleaning the bike this past Saturday I decided to see if I could mount the stock rider's seat but keep the Mustang passenger seat. And ya know what; it actually worked!! The only real noticable difference is in the vinyl used on each seat. But to the casual observer it's not that different. It was kinda wierd for the first 15 minutes or so, getting used to the stock seat again. It's definitely a softer seat, but the seating position is different also. It was almost like riding a different bike!!
I know this probably hasn't helped any, but seats are highly subjective; what works for one person may not work for another. And I'm still amazed that the same company can make one seat that is so comfortable and another that is so uncomfortable. BTW; I'm 5'11", but I figured that was close enough.

In The Wind,
Aaron
