Oil Change question 4 Years, 10 Months ago
Last time I changed Oil I went with Mobil One V Twin. I just hit the 4000 mile mark since changing. At what intervals do you guys change when running synthetic oil?

Personally I change engine oil every 4,000 using Mobil 1 V Twin, and change the transfer case every third oil change. We ride in a lot of heat down here and that is cheap insurance for my engine and drive. I use the K&N Filter as I like the quality of the filter.

Doc...Question

What are the pros cons of sinthetic?

Can you switch from reg to sinthetic at any time in the life of the motor?

What weight of sithetic should you run?

Advice please.

Cons ... expensive, especially if you have to buy the MC syn.

Pros ... quieter engine

You'll get lots of responses to oil but I run Mobile Red Cap 15W50 in mine. It's an automobile oil; API Service Classification SJ. You can't buy it any more but I have enough for 3 more seasons. If you can pick some up in Brandon at an-out-of-the-way-hole-in-the-wall place then stock up. It's the good stuff.

There may be an issue with the newer auto oils (SL) having friction modifiers so I would be careful.

I think you can use appropriate weight diesel oil.

Thnks Doc

Is their any issues with switching after 10 000 miles on the engine or should sinthetic be used from NEW only?

There's differences of opinion when one should switch but you're definitely OK with 10 k.

Nowadays you can also switch back and forth if need be.

3-4 thousand. Depends on the weather, could ride 500 miles in a weekend, so give myself a "window" between oil changes. Also depends on $$ I have when the time roles around , as it's about 50 clams per change.BB
