Blown fuse, and now a speedometer problem 1 Year, 3 Months ago
I'm not finding any advice on the HD forums, so I thought I'd try to see if there are any experts on electrical stuff here that could help me out with this one... This is the 2nd time my fuse has blown on the Battery Tender connector cable that's attached to the battery (yes I've got red to red and black to black). It's blown when the Battery Tender is NOT connected. I went on a 40-mile ride and on the way back I noticed my speedometer isn't registering the correct speed (reads 30mph while going about 55-60mph). Is there some weird electrical system goblin haunting my bike?

btw it's a HD 2001 FLHRCI

Thanks for any advice..

I would check the routing of the wire of the positive connection of the battery tender connector and the ground wire of the speedo, see if they cross anywhere and look to see if the insulation is ok. I would also make sure that the connection is tight on the battery as well. Only way the fuse is blowing is a short, but why would the speedo act up? Then again if they were crossing, once the fuse opens there would be no pos. power going across the neg side of the speedo wire either and shouldn't affect the speedo. could be 2 separate issues as well

OK figured out the blown fuse issue - a little chunk of the Battery Tender cable was exposed and must have touched a nearby part of the frame. Anyway, the fuse thing happened BEFORE the speedometer issue, so I'm concluding they're completely unrelated. Anyway, reading up on HD tech stuff, it looks like I might need to check my VSS (vehicle speed sensor). Hmmm... I'm pretty new to the HD world and have no idea WHAT or WHERE that thing is.. or what to check for once I find it.

Thanks for the reply erbman,
